been a bit busy to write in some ways. i think. i can never remember what i`ve been doing really.
well the sink has been broken, which is a pain.
i`ve gotten to see some music, so that`s good.
telefunk supported the gathering. they did an organic dance music thing. i wouldn`t call it trip hop as it had more energy to it. they were better than i expected but didn`t always have the chorus hooks to keep the attention whilst the same groove piled through a song. they also had an accordion as part of it, which adds a different perspective.
the gathering were great in many ways. so tight and mainly playing new songs which is all i really wanted. it did make for a pretty laid back set and that didn`t change till near the end when they played something off the first album. the crowd is still full of doom metal followers and they get all excited when something old is played. i`ve not worked out if they actually like the new stuff or if they just go and hope they play something old.
anyway, it was pretty impressive. they`re a really strong band and almost being held back in holland. i`d like to see them at glastonbury this year cos they might actually get to play to an audience not knowing what to expect from them. i won`t be at glastonbury though so i`ll just have to pretend.
the only disappointment was having to leave before the end to get a train. i never really had to do that in glasgow but it was getting late and natasja works early. so we left after 1h 20mins, at the last song of the main set i think. i was mainly satisfied anyway, but they don`t play the Black Light District till the encores and that`s my favourite song. it`s 16 minutes long though so no chance of holding back and waiting for it. isn`t like the train would wait for us.
moving onto last night in utrecht. nice weather. had a brief walk around before going into the gig. a strange man tried to tell us we had to put our jackets (currently around our waists) into the cloakroom as it`s policy. well it does say that on the website but it`s stupid. besides, our jackets were nothing more than shirts, so we just ignored him.
Alaska! played first. they`re 2 of the folk implosion without lou barlow and on record they`re reasonably good. they started off really well too with a very happy smiley drummer girl, and Ihmaad, the springiest thin man in the whole world. The first couple of songs showed a lot of promise. However, they didn`t play that many songs. By midset they were trying to become led zeppelin and were dragging the songs out with long jams. Then they did something that completely confused me by doing a cover song that no-one knows. It lasted for ages and was nowhere near as good as their own songs. So i was a little disappointed. It was a short set and they didn`t even try to play the best songs from their album.
Next up was Mia Doi Todd. She tried to set her agenda straight by coming on alone and singing away without playing her guitar.
I can`t deny she`s a very strong singer. It just doesn`t seem to have any intensity or excitement to it. She veered from acoustic Dawsons Creek fodder to overly serious Lilith Fair bores. It`s not that i hate her. Just so many better female songwriters.
Folk Implosion were much better anyway. Played a lot from the new album. Lou has his copyrighted melancholy voice back on form and is back to trying to play proper songs again. Older stuff was reworked slightly being a new band and all, but overall they were good. Maybe at their best for the quieter acoustic stuff too, though i`ve never seen such trouble to get a sound from an acoustic guitar before.
Nice to be surrounded by music again. Tomorrow is Bevrijdingsdag. The free concert in rotterdam isn`t so good but it does have magnapop and caeser playing back to back so is probably worth going along for a couple of hours to see them.
Been applying for jobs tonight so i`m worn out with being online. Time to go watch buffy before bed.
and it`s soooooooo hot in here tonight!
