Shopgirl (2005)
We rented this movie over the weekend, having heard it highly recommended from Cinecast. I always have a little bit of trepidation entering a movie with a well-known comedic actor trying for some more "small role" chops. Steve Martin carried off his role well, though, as did Danes and Schwartzman. It's funny and quirky and tender, but there's a lot to take away from the movie too. It has a kind of wit and wisdom about relationships that most comedies don't ever even bother to touch on, and it refuses to take the easy way out by making any characters particularly villainous. Everyone simply makes decisions based on their priorities and places in life, and it leads to romantic complications. Sounds about like real life, no?
