Scrivener Redux

Jan 04, 2010 12:02

Trying to implement Scrivener into my writing process once more. If only for the outlining, though I'll probably use it for the chapters as well; its ability to link different chapters and show the connectivity between characters (using keywords) is just too good to ignore.

Since I'm setting firm deadlines for the books I resolved to finish, I need to map out the chapters. I did that with the first book, but I used Stickies. Don't ask why; I can't exactly recall the reason, except it was available-convenient and free. That first book took 18 months to write from start to finish. Only The Dead took considerably longer.

Two finished novels isn't much of a sample, unless I count the five I've trunked in between. Sad statistic, that. One is Doe, which bears a strong resemblance to Dollhouse. I wrote a good portion of that book during the spring and summer of 2000. Then there's Wave, a thriller I started during the summer of 1999. That's five years before the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

See the lesson there? I need to write, and I need to finish. Most times I'm ahead of the curve.

So, this week's work involves planning. Then I can sit down to the actual writing come January 10. Which will give me 150 days to finish a first draft. I don't believe there will be as many false starts then, and I can revise as needed based on UWG critiques after the fact.

only the dead, sacrifices, process, 2010 resolution, writing, trunk novels, scrivener
