first off. a friend clued me in to some totally free hilarity...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u981JhkK46o brad neely of neelycomics does voice over narration for the first harry potter movie. hilarity ensues...i believe youtube has all the chapters. if not, head over to illegal art and d/l the audio sections...then find a copy of the first harry p. movie and listen. this is def. worth your time.
http://www.illegal-art.org/video/wizard.html make sure you watch the entire thing. you will laugh forever.
second. i recently spent an evening combing the internet for songs yo la tengo has covered. i've been listening to lots of tengo lately and i've been impressed by their ability write great original music while still reveling in the art of the cover song. it is also kinda great that many of the covers are songs i've never heard before. using fakebook, fuckbook(you la tengo as the condo fucks), and genius+love, i cobbled together a nice lil mix cd of the source material. i post the track listing here in the hopes that you will go forth and experience these tunes in both their original and covered formats. this is also a really interesting look at the influences and interests of one of the best bands from the past 20 years. educate, kiddies, you got lots to learn.
yo la tengo, source material:
the small faces - what'cha gonna do about it
slade - gudbuy t'jane
the rascals - come on up
the flying burrito brothers - tried so hard
jeffery fredrick and the clamtones - griselda
urinals - surfin with the shah
flamin' groovies - dog meat
the electric eels - accident
richard hell - the kid with the replaceable head
beat happening - cast a shadow
the kinks - oklahoma usa
cat stevens - here comes my baby
the beach boys - shut down
flamin' groovies - you tore me down
the scene is now - yellow sarong
nrbq - what can i say?
the troggs - with a girl like you
everything on this list is available on itunes. and i promise you, every song is great. i should thank adam l. for his post awhile back which clued me in to that condo fucks record. it is a messy, noisy love letter to dirt, booze and kissing. great summer music.
through the allmusic review of the condo fucks i found a reference to an old twin-tone replacements bootleg called, 'the shit hits the fans'. i got myself a copy of it and it is the mats at their best and worst. a straight to cassette recording with all the fuzz and insanity you could want. the mats do mostly covers, 24 songs total. i'd say they only play 5 or 6 in their entirety, most everything else starts with a bang and drunkenly fizzles out. nevertheless, my next mix project will involve pulling together all the original studio tracks covered by the mats on that bootleg. should be a real kick ass time.
