some of you maybe have known me long enough to know i don't go very long without making a new mix cd for myself or my friends. used to be tapes. those were simpler days. well, with the small free time i've found in the wee hours i put together a goddamn gem suited for early summer tuscaloosa drivin...gonna put the playlist up right here...hope you guys can cop some of these tunes for your summer listening pleasures. im serious, this is one of the best i've put together.
J DILLA - One For Ghost - short/sweet beat from his donuts record, a collection of mostly unused hip hop creations. this one gets the head going easy.
THE STREETS - Outside/Inside - gonna have to check out the streets twitter to get this one. maybe the best of the new tracks. amazing beat. weird lyrics. trust me, AMAZING beat.
APHEX TWIN - Alberto Balsem - this is the heaviest quiet song ever written by a band that wasn't called LOW. enjoy.
DILLINGER - Flat Foot Hustling - i've been into a lot of dub reggae lately. this ain't no bob marley bullshit. stuff is real, real dirty.
TALKING HEADS - Heaven - i'm starting to think everything this band ever did was amazing. im also having the same revelation about warren zevon. you should all be listening to lots and lots of zevon.
TOM WAITS - I Don't Wanna Grow Up - the man and his mind come together for an anthem about "adult" responsibilities. don't forget the struggle, don't forget the streets.
DINOSAUR JR. - Raisans - an absolute terror.
BRIAN ENO - The Big Ship - 2nd heaviest quiet song ever written by a band that was called STARS OF THE LID.
TODD RUNDGREN - Can We Still Be Friends? - for ed giles and all the lovers out there. you gotta love a bit of schmaltz. so polished it has to be evil.
COOKIE & THE CUPCAKES - Mathilda - this is a soul song. the real deal.
THE BEACH BOYS - Surf's Up - late era boys, dark, trippy, a commentary on their early work...
THE SHANGRI-LAS - You Can Never Go Home Again - gut punch
THE BUBBLING OVER 5 - Don't Mistreat Your Good Boyfriend - from an anthology of depression era american folk. half jazz, all blues.
THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS - John E. Smoke - best lyrics ever?
MICKEY & THE SOUL GENERATION - Mystery Girl - makes me want rum drinks and sunshine. well, more than i usually do.
YO LA TENGO - Saturday - stoner rock.
LAMBCHOP - Sharing A Gibson With Martin Luther King - so smooth...
THE APES - Green Grease - huge huge huge huge huge huge huge!
NEIL YOUNG - Unknown Legend - what can i say? i loved rachel getting married.
TALKING HEADS - This Must Be The Place(Naive Melody) - pop gets not finer than this song. it can quiet you down, start you up, get you dancing or get you falling asleep. the high water mark of a band that did nothing but flood and flood and flood.
if any of you try out some of these songs or, amazingly, recreate the mix, i'd like to know about it. i'm proud of this one.
