Mr President,
Or the person who reads these things,
I am a 42 year old white male. College educated and lice in the San Francisco bay area. I am not in the habit of writing to government officials, as I assume that you are busy fellow and will likely ignore what I say anyhow. I contributed to your campaign for the first time in my life and my wife made calls on your behalf.
I came of age during the Reagan years, and has seen the country slide to the right. I have seen my politics, which have not really changed in the last 24 years since I started voting, go from center right to far left. I was a life long Independent until 2000 when I saw the morass that was opening before my country in the person of our previous president.
What are those politics you might ask, they really boil down to "don't be stupid don't be a jerk". I saw the principles of fairness and giving everyone an even chance where everyone pays their fair share become everyone pays, except the super rich. I saw horrible things being done to people in my name. I saw the concept of preemptive war being done in my name. The last fellow who thought that preemptive war was a good idea burned in a bunker in 1945.
When I listen to the news, now rather than rage I feel satisfaction. I nearly came to tears tonight when I listened to a story on the news where I once again heard that the administration was doing the Right Thing. I recognize that Obama the president is going to be different than Obama the candidate. But what I see in Obama the president is a willingness to work with everyone. I also see a desire to Do The Right Thing. Not just in budgetary matters but wherever and whenever possible. To treat people like people. To treat people fairly. To fight bigotry and to make the people who can most afford to pay be the ones to dig the nation out of the hole that the last 28 years have put us in.
Those self same people who will fight you at every turn Mr. President. Those small minded pinheads who had their chance to run the country and who have made a right mess of things. Those people who spewed hate and small mindedness to make people scared and vote against their best interests.
You have chosen a difficult path. The right path. You will close a secret prison which would make dictators proud. You have taken flack for going after the greedy and the small minded. You believe that everyone has unalienable rights. You have stopped torture. You have stopped persecution of people using state approved medical herbs using the argument of states rights for a cause other than the limitation of rights. You have gone after the greedy and those that think because they are on the top, they deserve to kick those on the way up and should not shoulder their fair share of their burden.
Depending on the outcome of the 2008 elections, I was seriously considering emigrating to a country that was not falling into a moral morass of right leaning religious orthodoxy that limited the very existence of people I live and work with each and every day.
My favorite President in the Last Century was Theodore Roosevelt.
