Here is an outline of a speech I will be presenting at 4:55pm in Nagle Hall 106 at Texas A&M University, :
Name: Stephen Lynn
Title : “Medical Masterpieces or Lucid Dreaming”
Specific Purpose: I want my audience to become more educated on the pathways nootropics take which serve to enhance human brain activity.
Central Idea Statement : I would like to educate my audience on the mechanism involved in the metabolism of several specific nootropics which serve to enhance the brain in different and unique ways; the nootropics I wish to use as examples are piracetam, huperzine-A, and centrophenoxine .
Introduction:
Attention Grabber: I can still remember when I gained interest in the subject: my peers and I received the grades on our premier Chemistry exams and for the remainder of the semester I daily reenacted scenes from the days of Salem to McCarthy mentally accusing those around me of possessing some sort of advantage.
Specific Purpose: I wish to help you all gain an understanding of the various pathways common nootropics take in order to reach their end goal in enhancing human brain activity.
Relevance and Credibility: Whether it is with peers, enemies, or ones self, competition seems to be an underlying theme in all aspects of each of our lives, and often times the competition is between the mental acuity of those involved.
Central Idea: I wish to let you all know the specifics of the mechanisms involved in the metabolism process which occurs once some common nootropics of specific category are ingested; the nootropics I wish to use as examples are piracetam, huperzine-A, and centrophenoxine.
Body:
I. Piracetam
a. Possibly the most common nootropic, Piracetam is also one of the most highly touted nootropics available on the market.
b. Piracetam improves the function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine via cholinergic receptors.
i. These neurotransmitters are heavily rooted in the function of the memory process.
c. Because piracetam works on the functionality of acetylcholine it also synergizes when taken with various forms of choline.
d. The drug also increases the metabolism of various neurons and energy within the brain.
i. This action serves to increase the speed of recalling, memorizing, learning, and connecting information.
Transition Statement : Another example of a nootropic is the drug Huperzine-A, and while different than piracetam it serves to enhance many of the same cognitive functions through different, yet connected, passageways.
II. Huperzine-A
a. Huperzine-A is a very fast-acting achetylcholine esterase inhibitor.
i. Achetylcholine esterase is responsible for breaking down the achetylcholine in the brain; therefore achetylcholine esterase plays a very pertinent role in overall cognition.
1. Because the molecule Huperzine-A is small enough, readily crosses the Blood Brain Barrier allowing it to be a very strong achetylcholine esterase inhibitor. (Source : Wang, R., Yan, H, Tang, XC. Progress in studies of huperzine A, a natural cholinesterase inhibitor from Chinese herbal medicine. Acta Pharmacol Sin. 2006 Jan;27(1):1-26. Review.)
ii. Recently it has been proven that huperzine-A also stimulates Nerve Growth Factor as well as up-regulating Nerve Growth Factor receptors-both which help promote youthful congnition. (Source: Zhonggou Yao Li Xue Bao. 1999 Jul., 20: 601-3. Huperzine-A capsule enhance memory and learning performance in 34 pairs of matched adolescent students.)
Transition Statement : A substance which is known as a precursor to the neurotransmitters many other nootropics act on can also be classified as a kind of nootropic, an example of this type of drug is centrophenoxine.
III. Centrophenoxine
a. Centrophenoxine is a precursor to the previously discussed neurotransmitter, achetylcholine. (Source : www.uniquenutrition.net. Sept. 23, 2006.)
i. Because it is a precursor, once ingested and metabolized completely, it produces the actual achetylcholine chemical.
1. Due to this process, centrophenoxine increases the concentration of achetylcholine in the brain.
b. Due to its effects on achetylcholine, centrophenoxine also plays a huge role in increasing memory and overall cognitive functioning.
c. Centrophenoxine not only is a precursor of an important neurotransmitter, it raises phospholipids turnover including the ever important phospholipid known as phosphatidyl choline - a source of choline which is to be used in the synthesis of achetylcholine in cholinergic neurons.
i. It also increases the turnover of phosphatidylserine, another phospholopid nutrient shown to slow the decline of cognitive decay due to age. (Source : DrugBank Database : Phosphaditylserine.

Conclusion:
Specific Purpose: In my presentation I touched upon three common nootropics and explained the mechanisms through which they increase the overall cognitive behavior of the brain.
Central Idea: I have reviewed the various modes of action piracetam, huperzine-A, and centrophenoxine take in order to enhance the brain in several unique and interesting ways.
Closing Statement : All in all I hope each and every one of you can take away an understanding of the way these various mind altering substances can take in their ultimate goal of enhancing the way we all process and understand information.
As far as current news goes, I recently had my first Physics 208 : Electricity, Magnetism, and Optics exam. It went relatively well - the average grades should range from 20 - 40, so I expect a large curve - this is pretty normal in my major, actually.
We had the pledges first line-up Saturday night. It was too easy, as usual, with this pledgeclass. They did some perimeter checks with the letters, gettin' hosed, bows n' toes, yelled at, push ups, and general punishment type things. Some kids knew nothing about me so my pledgeclass and I got pissed and treated them to another night of punishment. Some kids quit, they're pusses.
The Tech tailgate is coming up this weekend, and we will have buses running from our house to the tailgate from 12-11p.m., all you can eat brisket, ribs, and steak, all you can drink booze, a big screen HDTV and sound sysmtem for those like me who want to watch the game and keep drinking at the tailgate, and a life band from 4-6p.m. It should be a blast. After this one we should have more just like it every home game. So if any of y'all like football want to come down to A&M and join the tailgate and the party at the house later on after the game, let me know and I'll put you on the lists.
Oh yea, I'm also a step-uncle, now. My step-brother, Hans, and his wife, Nadia, had a baby daughter on Friday.
I also got "preffed", or got preferenced, by a pledge to be his Big Bro. His name is Sigma Phi Epsilon Pledge William Byrne. We had partied alot over the summer while we were both intown for summer classes. He was my pledge-brother's, Daylan, old neighbor, so he brought Will out alot. I think we sealed the deal on becoming good-buddies the night the police barged into Daylan's place and gave a bunch of people MIPs. We took the two kegs over to the fraternity house and others followed. After like 5 of us were still standing and the keg was almost doneskies, Will picked the empty shell up and started throwing it, and I burned my hand with a cigarette on a dare. Will saw this dare and wanted a peice. So I asked him if he'd let me burn his hand with a cig. He agreed, I burned him, and we gave eachother manly high fives and drank more. Everbody else then passed out and I was left alone to drink on the keg... I did some keg stand by myself by putting my legs on the couch and balancing myself on the trashcan container. I guess I finished it, because the next morning an empty keg shell and a loaded .22 rifle were in the living room (we had been shooting shit with the gun.) Alumni came out later that morning and found these two objects and became very pissed - threatening to make this a dry house.
Ummm... Download some Old Crow Medicine Show and Drive By Truckers - same goes for Grateful Dead and Robert Earl Keen, Jr.
Here are some lyrics for y'all :
" Well I swear your perfume babe is made out of turnip greens
Well every time I kiss you girl it tastes like pork and beans
Even though youre wearing those uptown high heels
I can tell from your giant step youve been walking through the cotton fields
Ohhhhhh youre so down homegirl
Every time your monkey jive takes my breath away
Well every time you move like that I got to get down and pray
Girl you know that dress you wear is made out of fiber glass
Well every time you shake it baby I got to go to Sunday
Ohhhhh youre so down homegirl
Im going to take you to the muddy river and push you in
So I can watch the water roll on down your velvet skin
Im gonna take you down to New Orleans down in Dixie land
So I can watch you do the second line with an umbrella in your hand
Ohhhhh youre so down homegirl "

For Dano :
" First she drove me down
Tossed me round
Slandered my name all over town
My good gal ain't no good to me
She makes true love more like misery
I'm walkin' hunched
I get drunk a bunch
Sucker up and take a punch
My good gal ain't no good to me
N' I think I've acted reasonably
But I miss her....... mmmhhm
Last time I kissed her........ mmmhhmm
She sure tasted sweet
Like spoiled meat
And other's breath, you're so discreet
My good gal ain't no good to me
Oh no, no, no, no, no
She can powder her nose
'Til the bars are closed
Waitin' in the parking lot, where'd she go
My good gal ain't no good to me
Mama tell me how could this be...
But I miss her.... mmmhhmm
All that I wish from her...mmmhhm
Is the time of day
Don't go out of your way
Just leave me with a stack of them bills to pay
My good gal ain't no good to me
She's supposed to have the courtesy
To shut the door
When she's been playin a whore
Pick his fuckin' rags up off the floor
My good gal ain't no good to me
And I only wish that she could see...
That I miss her......mmmhhmm
But I miss her.... mmmhhmm
All I have is a picture.... of her
Taken years ago
I was a kid you know
We were leaned up against that El Dorado
My good gal ain't no good to me
She robbed me of my liberty
Tonight I drove her out of town
Then I pushed her down
And I shot her brains onto the cold clay ground
My good gal ain't no good to me
Not even in my memory
But I miss her......"
