On the Reference of Letting Agencies

Feb 14, 2007 18:59

So, the Letting Agency began checking out our references for the new house today. Sirius needed to provide a previous home address, Cookie need to tell them where he worked (since they lost his temping agency in the Postal Address records) and Washu smells. No, really.

My phone was playing up, but I knew they were keen to get some info off me, so (after rushing home from work), I ring the guy up.

Me: "I heard you wanted to talk to me about my reference for "
Lettings Agency: "Oh yes, right. You have a County Court Judgment against your name. Bankruptcy. For £1205. It hasn't been paid."
Me: "I have?"
L.A.: "Yes."
Me: "That's news to me. I was never told."
L.A.: "You must have been. You can only receive them from going to court."
Me: "I've never been to court. Ever." (This is true, honest!)
L.A.: "Oh, uhm. Right."
Me: "When does it say this happened?"
L.A.: "On 17th January 2002."
Me: "2002?"
L.A.: "Yep."
Me: "I would have been seventeen at the time. Doing my A-levels. I didn't even have any real money of my own."
L.A.: "That's odd."

Yes, very odd. So they're saying that I owe the courts £1205 from a bankruptcy thing from when I was still in school and NOT EVEN LEGALLY AN ADULT? Something fishy going on there. Lettings Agent guy said that if it affected our tenancy, he'd check with the credit check people and put forward my case (specifically the not-even-being-legally-liable).

Furthermore, since I haven't been to court to collect it, were this CCJ actually real, they would have tried taking money from my wages, and I shouldn't keep being offered loans and credit cards and stuff. The only money that's been taken off my wages other than tax has been my student loan repayments. All £20 of them so far. ¬_¬

So yeah. the guy said I shouldn't worry. We've got enough income between the other three tenants to cover the landlord's requirements. Worst comes to the worst, Siri said he'll be my guarantor.

Problem is, I don't want this hanging over me in the future, should I ever need a real loan or something. I know I shouldn't worry, but you kinda do. If the credit check people's systems can make such lovely mistakes, what else are they capable of?

Pfah. That's stress enough for tonight. Happy Pittas & Houmous Day, people! Have lots of sex for me, you hear?
