I'm still enjoying the nice warm weather. Until it gets hot enough that long walks with backpacks become uncomfortable, I think I'm going to hoof it home from school pretty frequently. It takes 30-40 minutes, but it's nice to be outside.

On Friday during my walk home, I passed a trio of former students while still on campus, and then ran into Ryan and a friend of his in front of Target after I came out of Barnes. He had just bought a new bike. Also, I passed a guy, five or so years older than me, on the bridge who was walking along while reading the latest issue of the Transformers: Escalation comic.

As I approached home I decided to go to Dairy Queen for one of their new Kit Kat Blizzards, so I called David and he met me and we went and got some. It was pretty good, but, I got a little bored with it by the end. Next time I won't get the biggest size they offer. And... although I intended to eat something later, I don't think I did, so I guess that should count as my first milkshake dinner for 2007, even though Blizzards are too thick to drink.

Tomorrow is my 31st birthday. I think we're going to Culver's at some point, but since robowang can only hang out on Wednesday this week, we're going to do a combined birthday thing for both David and me (his birthday's the 3rd) that night and go to Ponderosa. I still have a free steak owed me by that restaurant from our last visit there, ages ago, when my steak took them a really long time to cook or something. I don't even really remember what happened. But I have a signed business card from the manager saying I get a free steak, and that's the important part.

I recently finished the last book in my queue among the books that I actually have here in Columbus (it was an old scifi novel called The World Inside which I have mixed feelings about), so I needed to pick something to come next. I recently learned of a book called "Breaking Hearts" which is bunch of unrequited love case studies which reverses tradition by giving equal or greater attention to the object of the love rather than the lover, which sounds really interesting and which I'm sure would give me ideas for the website. I've also been thinking about finally reading Ender's Game, which people have been recommending to me for more than ten years, or His Dark Materials of which I have been running into mentions for about five years.

But, for the moment, I decided to go with some Conan. I've been really enjoying the Conan comic series from Dark Horse, and thought maybe it was time I read some of R.E. Howard's original stories. I picked up the comic when it started sort of on a whim, largely because it was being written by Kurt Busiek, and was immediately sucked into it. My impressions of Conan from all the pop culture references were quite different than the reality. The character is far from a simple oaf, and the stories are more sophisticated and rich than I had expected. And Howard inspires such fervor from his devoted fans that I felt like I should see what the fuss was about. Anyway, I went with a relatively recent collection called The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, which seemed like a good starting point. It has the first real Conan story, a few that are considered among the very best, and Howard's "The Hyborian Age" essay which outlines the setting.

When I ran into Ryan outside Target, he seemed pretty amused and surprised that I had just bought a Conan book. I guess I don't exude a sense of ruthless, brutal manliness.

Lastly, I have previously mentioned that I love the artwork of this person Vera Brosgol. Her latest blog post is just adorable. I liked it so much that I took the time to make a wallpaper of it for myself, which was actually kind of a pain since the background has a parchment-like color variation, so I had to clone it all over the place and smooth out the seams and such.

Aw, man... no Naruto this weekend? And Battlestar is gone until 2008... where'd my weekend TV viewing go?

art, tv, teaching, books, kit kats, comics, cartoons
