The Ghibli movies begin airing on Turner Classic Movies tonight. In the 8-midnight block are the dubs, and then immediately afterwards are subtitled versions. This week is "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke". Next week is "Nausicaa" (highly recommended!!) and "Castle in the Sky". On the 19th, "My Neighbor Totoro", "Porco Rosso", and "Whisper of the Heart". "Totoro" will be the new Disney/BV dub which stars Dakota Fanning and her real-life little sister as Satsuki and Mei. The previous, and generally well-liked, dub was done by Fox under Carl Macek (of "Robotech" infamy). That dub, and the airing of "Whisper" (which has also been dubbed), are both premieres for the US. Finally, on the 26th, "Only Yesterday" and "Pom Poko". "Only Yesterday" is also getting its US premiere here, although it has not been dubbed, so both airings of it will be subtitled. It is not scheduled to be released by Disney in the US at all, so if you're collecting Ghibli films, make sure to tape that one. (Strangely, the listing of the films posted to Newsarama recently claimed that the first airing of "Only Yesterday" *would* be dubbed, but, I imagine that has to be a mistake rather than there being a dub produced that nobody knew about yet.)
