I had an interesting dream last night. I was standing on top of a mountain. Actually I'm not sure it was me standing up on the mountain, maybe that is just where it started. The man on the top of the mountain turned his eye toward a telescope. It was one of those things where you put some coins in and you can look through it. Like those

Both of the men were you. You were looking into the stars, recognizing your ambition and your potentials. Unfortunately, you couldn't focus your attention on those things. You're inexplicably drawn to what's not only more familiar to you, but what's below you... physically in this case, but perhaps metaphorically.
There was a solitary female in this house. I wonder who that might represent? I think the man in the house might have been another you or another part of you, frustrated after realizing what you're doing. You can't get your mind off this female, and this rational side of you (maybe a possible future you, married to this female... you did refer to her as his wife) is pissed off and wants you to recognize how much time and energy you're wasting. It's like a regretful father watching his son go down the same path he did and behaving indignantly as a reaction.
I don't know why it would end in shooting (especially in the kidneys), but that does seem reasonable in a dream state. In a dream, where nothing is real, the best way for extreme anger to be expressed may be a bullet.

Steve, this is telling me that you need to start focusing on your own ambitions before you lose your motivation. You've already let it begin to slip by taking your eyes away from the stars. Get your head together, then do what's right for you.
Be careful with drinking, I think that if you feel you've lost your drive, then you might turn to that to make yourself forget what you're causing yourself to be blind to. It'll give you kidney problems.
