What a night - FCB routs Aberdeen 5:1

Feb 21, 2008 22:00

What a night... it's nights like these that make my heart beat with the passion of football!

And yes,
das_teufelchen, I thought of you twice!  *hugs, wishes you could have been there...*

Everything about tonight was just so awesome... not just the game.

Because I'm not a professional sports writer, I won't even try to write a full-blown review of the game. Instead, I'll try to share what made tonight so magic.

First of all - I started off the evening by shipping 5/6 in the subway on the way to the match *dies laughing*  On my way down the stairs to the platform I saw this beautiful boy wearing a VanBuyten jersey - so what else could I do - in my Demichelis jersey - other than go stand right next to him?? We got so squeezed into the subway together that it wasn't possible to talk ; but at least anyone with their eyes open in our car got an eyeful of 5/6!

The Allianz Arena, all lit up in red, looked so incredibly awesome when you come out of the subway station and see it shining up on the hill in front of you. Makes any proud Bayern heart beat that little bit more red ;)

There were a lot of Aberdeen fans there, too - and I thought it was so incredibly cool that most of them were wearing the kilt. They looked so fantastic, these rough-and-tumble, hard-around-the-edges men wearing their team jerseys and their kilts. I get so sad sometimes about how the world is getting so monotone and similar, and I just love local culture, tradition and pride. Just like I also love to see a Bayern jersey worn with Lederhosen.

Anyway - they were very jovial and funny on the way into the stadium - I even spontaneously jumped into one of their group photos. I loved not just how proud they were of their team & their local culture, but how much fun they were having with the Bayern fans, and the fans with them.

Once in the stadium I first went & looked at the field - I love watching our boys warm up. They do the absolute silliest things! *squees at the memory*

Then on up to our seats, way up high but near the middle. From up high you can't really see the players' faces, and I miss the close-ups from TV. But you can see the whole field, and get a way better sense for the flow of the game. Besides, when you know the players so well, you can always tell who is who, even from half-a-mile up. I sat there and sang myself silly along with such classic football tunes as "Stern des Südens" (the Bayern club song) as well as the Three Lions song - which made the Aberdeen fan block whistle like crazy (duh!) Then they played some of that cool music (I forget what it's called) from the World Cup in France. The atmosphere was just so charged - so much excitement in the air - the Aberdeen fan block going just nuts, as well as the Bayern fan blocks. I was so giddy with excitement, but also nervousness - we just had to win!

My husband made it to our seats literally 2 seconds before the starting whistle (he left work late & got stuck in the subway...) and the game began!

Here are the highlights with stolen pictures (because my camera is crap from so far away...)

Goal One: Lucio! It was a penalty kick, and Aberdeen built such a huge wall I just rolled my eyes and said to my husband "man, that could never go in!" And was just floored when WHAM! In it went.

Lucio is still my least favorite in defense... but hey, he managed to get a little closer to being on my good side as close as a grumpy old Brazilian could ever get, anyway.

The game was exciting, we were having a blast - and then whose head was in the right place at the right time???

Dani getting the love he deserves

Then came one of the most awesome things, that just so totally made the night.

They didn't give up - they didn't sit back and quit playing - they kept going and going and going!!!

The old Bayern of years gone by would have just sat back and ridden out the victory. But this Bayern had joy in playing, and I never felt that the fans have been closer to the players, and that the players have played so much for the fans. It was just magic, the feeling in the Arena, just magic. I swear. The hair is standing up on the back of my neck again, just sitting here thinking about it!!

And - I saw another Demichelis jersey in the crowd - a few rows in front of us. I just had to say hi to the guy wearing it on my way to get our half-time alcohol-free beers; we gave each other mutual compliments on our impeccable taste in jerseys and footballers :D

But yes, there was one weak point in the eveing:

Willi... get a grip... please...

But despite Willy's incredible erratic now-I-can-play-football-now-I-can't moments, the game went on. I was almost wishing Hitzfeld would replace him with my least favorite Bayern Lell - that's how bad Willy was playing. No joke.

Poldi had a couple of good runs on goal. My husband leaned over to me and said "look at him... he wants a goal. He's going to get a goal". You could tell by the way he was running, where he was positioning himself... just everything about him said "here. now. me."

And - yes!!! He did it!!! I just died I was so happy for him.

Even though I couldn't see his face, I just *knew* he was looking like this... I swear, you could feel it.

And then I had to think of Das_Teufelchen again (!!) when her other boy scored a goal - I mean it was great, but man was I missing my own boy... *sniffs and wipes away a tear in honor of Micho's hamstring*

It's Mark's turn to get some love...

But all good things must come to an end. Even this incredible game. We stayed and watched the players come around and cheer to the fans - I know I've said it once, but it was just incredible to feel how close the players were to the fans tonight. I swear I'm not just making that up - you could so totally feel it!!!

What I wouldn't give to madly throw myself at them say
thank our boys personally for such a magical night!

Now I'm all keyed up to find out who we play against next, and will do all I can to get tickets again!

FC Bayern...
Stern des Südens...
Du wirst niemals untergehen...

*sighs*...
