After ten years, who would have thought that I finally would end up in the same room as Geri, Emma, Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria. Worth the wait- of course, of course. But, ten years ago, we were only planning on paying $50 to see them. Add $90 to that...but it was still worth it.
My dear friend Melissa and I haven't had many adventures since our middle school days, wandering around good old H-town and then pretending to have met the Spice Girls. We made her sister cry once because of that. This weekend was good though, a good adventure to put in our books.
It started out when I met Melissa Saturday in NYC at the Malibu diner in Chelsea for some dinner. Mmm grilled cheese. Then, we headed to the City Bakery for hot chocolate. Every day this month, they have a different flavor- Saturday was caramel hot chocolate. Sadly (and very strangely for New York) the place closed at 6pm. So, we headed to the next best place for hot chocolate- the ABC Carpet and Home store. We signed their guest book (to let people know we were going to see the Spice Girls) and then ventured to the UCB. In the four years we've been going to the UCB, we've never seen anything except Asssscats. But since we LOVE Jason Mantzoukas, we decided to check out his improv troupe, Mother. Fantastic. Hilarious. Melissa and I have come up with a new plan- once I find my way into the city for good, we're going to spend one week checking out what the UCB has to offer each day. We'll make notes and decide which of the performers are the best (and cutest). On the second week, we'll stalk them and see where they go after the shows. On the third week, we'll attempt to talk to them. And on the fourth week- marriage. Yes, that means you, Jason Mantzoukas. Be ready.
After the show on Saturday, we hit up Gristedes so Melissa could get the ingredients to make coconut almond muffins. Mmm. I was devastated to learn that Lipton Pasta Sides are $2 in the city and the special ones are almost $3. This saddens me mucho. I can get 3 Pasta Sides for that price at Giant with my Bonus Card.
Sunday, we slept in and then headed to a lovely thrift store. After contemplating buying a purse I had no use for (I didn't buy it) we headed toward my favorite Asian market, M2M. Melissa lives really close to it. We got this amazing ice cream called
Mochi. And even though it was FREEZING out, we walked along with our frozen goodies. Then we stopped at the Strand where I picked up a book by Ray Bradbury. After that, it was to the Shake Shack. I can't explain how much I love those cheeseburgers. All was well until a blizzard started to cover our french fries. So not funny. We treaded through the snow to the City Bakery- which was open this time. The hot chocolate of the day was tropical. Mmm. I kinda wanted to stay in NYC all month to try some of the other flavors- green tea, chili pepper, beer, and some normal ones, too.
And then, we hopped on the PATH train and headed to NJ. We were expecting the whole train to be filled with people singing Spice Up Your Life. But no. That didn't happen until we got into Jersey. Then, seriously, everyone started to sing. This was all before we even got into the Prudential Center, too.
The Girls were way late. They were supposed to go on at 7:30, but didn't until 8:30. Melissa and I figured it was because they had to jump their British bus over the Brooklyn Bridge, then Emma had to do her cute face to a cop to get out of a ticket. But, it was taking longer than usual of course, because she's not as cute as she was during Spice World.
Finally they came on and my childhood was complete. Melissa and I have seen most of the pop bands from back in the day- Nsync (way more than one time), BSB, Britney, 98 degrees, and countless one-hit wonder bands. This completed everything. Actually, we decided that Nsync should have been the Spice Girls' dancers. Now, that would have been perfection. The Girls were everything I expected and more. The costumes were amazing, the dances and the props were AMAZING...the whole thing they did with Holler was dirty and awesome, and Geri leaving the stage all magically by disappearing down under it...cheesy but so good. SO GOOD! And Mel B brought her baby up on stage during Mama. When they sang that and showed the pics of them when they were little with their moms, and then pics of them with their own kids...wow, a lot of time went by really really fast. Ten years.
Anyway, we made some lovely new friends on the train home- a guy who showed us his Spice Wannabe shirt and then talked to us about Lost, and a pair of blond boys who flew to the city from Miami so that they could catch the show. They had shirts made- "Majorly Posh." Before we went to bed Sunday night, we stopped one more time at M2M so Melissa could get more ice cream and I could buy some Hello Kitty water. Mmmmmmm.
And now I'm home. I managed to whittle down my 100+ pics (actually it may have been closer to 200) to just 60 for facebook. Go
look.
I'm also hoping it snows tomorrow so I have an excuse to wear my new rain boots. They're black with music notes on them. Then again, I really don't wanna go outside tomorrow...so classes better be canceled.
Good night and Girl Power.
