Hmm lots going on

Well its been a while since I did a real update so here it goes...

A couple weeks ago I had my quad screening done. Basically they do a blood test and it tests for Downs, Trisomy 18, Neural Tube Defects and something else that escapes me right now.

No one has to have it done, and I did it more of an "Ah I'm too young for these to be a factor but let's check anyways" thing. Much to my suprise it came back with a 1-14 chance of the baby having a Neural Tube Defect, Spina Bifida being the most common of these. If you are not sure what that is you can always google images but they are disturbing or at least sad.

So here was our first stress. We made an appointment for an ultrasound to make sure we could not see anything horrible. First ultrasound came back fine... Nothing major that the Doc could see. Then we decided instead of an Amnio which could cause miscarrage(small percent but still a risk) we would do a level 2 u/s first then figure out what was next. (oh as my Dr puts it, the difference between a level 2 and a normal u/s machine is a normal only cost about 40k, a level 2 costs about 500k... so a MUCH better machine.) This would pick up anything we might have missed on the normal one.

This all happened as of Friday (the 3rd), Sam and I then had to wait until monday to see when our appointment would be for the Level 2. Talk about stressful, having to talk about our options should something bad be there.

Monday Cimmerii was wonderful and came down and helped Sam with the patio area so that took most of the day.. The patio just needs to be put in now and one of the honey do's is then done :P.

I spoke with the DR's office monday while they were working on the yard and my appt was for Tuesday at 10:30. Tues we went to Skyridge Hospital to have it done.

Got some awesome pictures,

and did not find any defects we can see.... the Dr recommended againts the Amnio since we cannot see anything. He found that the umbilical cord only had two blood vessels so there could be other defects but the heart and everything looked good, we should not have to worry.

Here is where it got not so good... They also did a transvaginal just to check my cervix as a precaution because of the Leep procedure I had back in the day. The sonographer said my cervix looked a little short and she would go get the dr.

Dr came in checked and said "yep it's very short we are going to have to put you on bedrest and then possible do a cerclage" He then checked my cervix by hand (he was not a gentle man btw it hurt like hell)and found that I was already 1 cm dilated. Not super good... not even a little. He called my Dr who said he would do the procedure and to head over to his office at 1.

Got a call from that office saying " We never said 1 we said 2 and no your not having surgery we don't beleive the other DR so we will do our own exam" yay me.

We got there at two and the dr did an exam, and transvaginal u/s he didnt see that i was dilated but I did have a short cervix and my membranes were funneling. Bottom line it was up to us but he didn't see the need to do the cerclage, if i had an incompetent cervix we would find out soon enough by probably losing the baby. Oh and the baby had dropped already too.

Now keep in mind im only *almost* 5mo. 19 week 3days at this point.

Here is the run down on the survival rate
* 21 weeks or less: 0% survival rate
* 22 weeks: 0-10% survival rate
* 23 weeks: 10-35% survival rate
* 24 weeks: 40-70% survival rate
* 25 weeks: 50-80% survival rate
* 26 weeks: 80-90% survival rate
* 27 weeks: greater than 90% survival rate
etc etc etc.

Even if the baby did survive ar say 22 weeks it would not be very healthy and could die soon after or have horrible defects.

Both Sam and I's gut feeling and the need to stop the pissing match between the two doctors made us convinced we should do it. We told him to schedule it, which he did for 5:30 that night at Parker Hospital and we drove on over there.

After the surgery which I was awake for the whole time, very strange, the DR told me he was glad we did it as my cervix was really soft and he probably could have got a finger in there so it was after all a good idea. paraphrasing but you get the gist.

We did get to see what the rooms are like there as Sam and I stayed over for monitoring and they are really nice.. The people are wonderful (except for one lady in the ER)and over all was just a good experience concidering.

I am healing nicely, the DR says everything is still good and although the baby could still come early we are hoping this will give it a better chance to survive.

Now I am at work and trying to get caught up with obviously missing so much time.. still don't wanna be here but oh well.

Ok thats all for now :P
