Jesus shitting christ, the new comment pages are ugly beyond my wild dreams. When will this Web 2.0 crap with gradients and blinky crap go awayyyyyyyyyyy.
Anyways, PSA: there's a pretty decent clone of the old comment pages at http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/25451.html. It makes your main journal page kinda ugly but the comments look almost the same as they did before-- so if you mod a kinkmeme or something, it may be relevant to your interests. Also I'm using it on my own journal now because I LIKE vast and unadorned swathes of black text on white.
I'm still hoping that LJ rolls this release back... but in the meantime I've been hanging out on tumblr a lot /facepalm. Oh well.
