A year later

For 53 yrs, I had lived in the south King County area of western Washington. 30+ yrs in Federal Way and 21 yrs in Kent (lower right hand corner in 1st picture).

Last year I was forced to move. With wanting to keep both dogs, a friend had offered me a room at his place, so I accepted his offer.

This weekend (last weekend of June) marks 1 year of living in Belfair (left side of picture)

In past postings, I had refered to this place as "the house in the woods". It's not a very big house, but for 2 people and a dog (after losing Zorro last September), it's the right size. The house is about 1700++ sq/ft with a 1200'ish sq/ft detached garage. This all sits on 5 acres

By the numbers: (these numbers are all 1 way milage)
*house to main road/hwy, 1.2 miles (down hill)
*state park (Twanoh) 2 miles (lower left corner in above picture, 6 1/2 minute drive)
*closest store 3 miles (mom/pop type gas station/store)
*HWY 3, 6.5 miles (Highway 3, leads from Bremerton (to the north) to Shelton (to the south)
*closest grocery store/gas station/downtown 8.5 miles
*HWY 101, 14.5 miles
*work, 20
*nearest department store 22.5 miles
*bank branch office, 24
*Tacoma's Narrow Bridges, 38 miles
*mom's 55 miles
*last place I called home, 65 miles
*downtown Seattle 80 miles

Having lived in a fairly populated area all those years, it took a while to get adjusted to the lack of population. But over all, I've come to enjoy it quite a bit, and I am slowly prefering it. There are things population has that I miss, but as time has gone by, they are things I don't need.

Out here in the woods, what we DO NOT have / been replaced by:
*a mail box w/ P.O.Box
*garbage cans w/recyle station 14'ish miles away
*dishwasher w/ dishes washed by hand
*sew w/ septic tank
*cable/satellite w/ MIFI
*lawn mower w/ weed whacker (powered with 120 feet of extention cords)
*noisy kids next door w/ birds chirping, bees buzzing
food waste products is thrown out in the woods. heating (water and house) and cooking is done with gas (propane), certifide wood stove is our extra heating source.

Of the 5 acres this place sits on, only about 1 1/2 acres are being used. The crater you see next to the house, is the septic tank cover. Just to the left of the house (lurking in the shadows of the trees) is the garage
While leaning out the back door, I snagged this 3 picture panoramic of the back yard/garden area, back in mid April

with being in the woods, deer, rabbits, raccoon's and birds wonder through the place. So a fence was raised to keep the 4 legged critters out, and things were raised so no stooping will be needed. This year we are growing corn, tomato's, peppers, lettice and a few other things. That raised tub, captures rain water off the garage, and the water is gravity fed for watering in the garden

Over all, I do like it here.
*Do not have to worry about anyone knocking on the door, only person who enters the yard/property with out warning is the utility meter readers (propane people enters, but thats after a service call is made)
*Can step outside a relieve myself with out having to worry about being seen
*outside dress code is at my own risk.
*no police/fire/rescue sirens to be heard
*summer time sleeping (day time naps/night time slumber) can be done with doors wide open.
*Outside of house has flood lights all the way around, anything/one comes near the house at night, lights come on.

Well. 1 year down, will see how many more there will be. At this rate, several more would be nice
