Just watched Gattaca for the first time. Interesting film. I identified more with the losers than the winners.
See, I'm not convinced that the drive to succeed (exemplified by Ethan Hawke's Vincent) is just a matter of choice. I see it as more of an inborn thing, perhaps something that *can* be genetically engineered. Which would ironically undercut the film's efforts to exalt the intangible, uncontainable human spirit.
Of course, my opinion on this may simply be a rationalization to excuse my comfortable laziness. But note that Vincent's loser counterpart (Jude Law's Jerome) is inspired by Vincent's drive and success not to comparable success, but to quite a different end. So perhaps the filmmakers don't think the drive to succeed is a matter of choice, either.
