I randomly downloaded The Maine's newest EP, The Way We Talk, and have been loving it. I listen to it on the train, I use one of the songs as a pre-class tune while my members are entering the studio...I've got almost all the songs memorized....and I'm inspired. Even though those guys are really just kids - I think the oldest one is 20, but that's ok. It's a good listen and I recommend it. I'm sure they're fun to see live - too bad I discovered them the day AFTER they played House of Blues in Chicago. They also have a track on the hilarious and actually well put together Punk Goes Crunk album, which I recommend for a fun background listen as well.
I covered 2 classes then spent the day at the theatre on Easter. I've never really been one to get excited about Easter, but the past couple years I had plans due to my job as a church singer. Everyone in Chicago was all family-oriented and brunch-bound and it made me a little sad for sentimental times with my sister; looking for chocolate on the mantle and hidden behind the sub woofer. But I was invited over to Cassie and Carrie's after work, and it ended up being a nice, quaint night where we by chance ended up in the kitchen cooking a tiny chicken dinner for us and their other roommate. In the middle of it, Cassie said, "Oh my god you guys! We just made Easter dinner!" and then it felt a little sentimental in the cheesiest of ways. But something that counted nonetheless. Rachel (their other roommate) even said grace. I witheld my comment from Christmas Vacation ("Grace? She died years ago....)....
But last night, I was given an official Easter 2009. Thanks to Adam. I've been up since 4:30am and I'm still on a high from the time we had last night. He had told me beforehand to pick a place on my list of restaurants that I've wanted to try since moving here. So naturally, I went to my Yelp bookmarks and came up with a wine bar/small plate place in Bucktown called Bluebird (RECOMMEND IT!!). I got dressed up and he picked me up after his long day at work and my long day of my regular classes and substitute classes. When I got in the car, I saw the cutest Easter basket complete with a stuffed bunny.
Why is he so cool? I was making him a fun collage when the printer ink ran out. So I felt like an ass showing up empty handed to our Easter. I told him I'd even show him the streaked, mostly green photo page if he wanted. :) But he said he honestly enjoyed being there for me and giving me the lamest little Easter gift.
I'm thankful he cares so much.
And that I care too.
I get the feeling he's been walked on quite a bit in the past, like me. In fact we've talked a little about it and so much of our pasts are alike in that way. And other ways.
Before I launch into an even more cheesy lovey dovey, high-on-yesterday blog, I'll stop and just say that I'm lucky.
We've decided to go by the name A Sample Life for our music. Performing another test round with all new material tomorrow night!!! First song: In the Red (When Life Just Sucks)
