Have I ranted here about whaling yet? I don't think so. But anyway, can't someone (I don't know who- maybe the UN, but SOMEONE) just get in there and say "Look, enough with all this BS about scientific research. What fricken scientific study requires you to kill 1000s of whales a year? How the hell did THAT get past the ethics committee? And if it did, then your ethics committee is fucked. Fix it."
Yes, I know that has zero percent chance of working. But for heaven's sake, there is no way it can be rationalised. It is just unacceptable. I don't know what I can do to help stop it, but if anyone knows, please tell me. I know people argue that it's part of the Japanese culture but if it's really been going on for 1000s of years then they sure as hell didn't originally do it by going in huge ships down to Antarctica. If people are honestly sticking to that argument then the whalers should be restricted to using "traditional" means to hunt, and restricted to Japanese waters.
Everyone knows how much I love Japan, and Japanese culture, and nearly all things Japanese, but those whalers need a severe smack (or harpoon) in the head.
