Was pleased to make it along to tonight's ACS meeting on the subject of data security and why people are untrustworthy in more ways than I had previously imagined. Mmmmmmm. Skullduggery. Some nifty tips on hard disk security, which unfortunately due to the ethical requirements of my profession I cannot share with you. Also learned something about the murky borders between legal and illegal activities.
What I can say is that you can't trust any process short of a pulverising machine to really delete your data. Forget simple smashing, mere chainsawry, fire, flood, magnets, or software overwrites (although a 4-year-old human apparently comes close to the required destructive capabilities): nothing short of a pile of dust is really safe from modern recovery methods, given adequate time and resources. And nifty machines.
Much more administrivia than usual at tonight's meeting, so I once again skipped the networking opportunity with free drinks I can't drink and food I can't eat. Still, someone came and sat next to me and introduced himself so I can claim to have networked a bit. I definitely feel a bit more professionally developed.
On the way home I decided to indulge in some squid rings, but the squid ring place was closed, and for the next week as well. In Lent! Must be some family emergency :-(
Got the eyebrows done this afternoon; I can now emote more clearly.
Tomorrow I hope to go to the stables and practice my recovered crazy knot-tying skilz, and with any luck get to handle some horseflesh. Then I need to spend some time on Swancon things... It's getting to that time of year where everything possible is being deferred until AS (After Swancon).
