It's Art

Somewhere in the mid 1990's the business I was working for was broken into in the middle of the night. The alarm company alerted the owner, who met the police on the grounds to check for damage and missing items.

When they reached my cubicle the cop poked suspiciously at a dangerous-looking item sitting on the partition. It stood out; this was a pure software company with no fun bits of engineering crawling up the walls, but I'd been there for more than a year and had decorated my workspace without restraint.

The subject of the police investigation was a bulky motorcycle glove, festooned in multi-coloured wires and gaffer tape. Sharp metal spikes extended from the fingertips. It's suffered a bit over the years, but this is what it looks like now:

"What's this?" demanded the bristling young policeman, "It looks like a weapon!"*

He was, by all accounts, extremely excited.

My employer told me she had difficulty keeping a straight face while she replied "No, it's not a weapon. It's Art."

Art is, after all, quite dangerous *fist pump*.

(*) I wish I could report that he said "What's all this then?" but that would be a distortion of history and all Wrong.

art, work
