Life is insane right now and I love it.
I've been in the city for a little over a week now.. and here is my rundown on things so far:
I love the area around Union Square. There is literally everything I need all within walking distance, and if not I can hop on the subway right outside of the dorm. Within a block there's: a sephora, barnes and noble, two grocery stores, forever 21, and a million other little shops. Then there's this little farmers market with fresh produce and organic stuff, and a bunch of little vendors selling paintings, trinkets, etc. along the side of the park
Monday and Tuesday of last week mostly consisted of moving in and organizing my things, so nothing really happened then because I didn't want to wander around late at night.
Random: A girl I went to elementary school and high school with, is living down the hall from me this summer.
Wednesday afternoon I did some walking arond the area and got my work schedule. 4-5 days a week! Heck yes. Went to Times Square and got some chocolate at the Hershey store.
When I got back I was cleaning up the apartment and dropped a trashcan on my foot, breaking the little toe next to my big toe. It turned a dark purple/blue/black, I couldn't put any pressure on it, and it bent at a funny angle. Guh, I'm a walking disaster. Literally.
Later that night, Cait Sharp, her roomate from Marist, and I went to this venue with live music, which looked like a biker club from the outside. Looked the same from the inside too.. only with more of a punk attitude. Leather- both in pant and jacket form, seemed to be a popular trend.
A few so/so bands later, we left and walked around st. marks place, and ended up at this keraoke lounge where the only person there was this little old man at the bar with his own book of songs to sing. The people working there were giving us attitude, so we left and headed back to the Continental to watch some more bands.
The bollocks were the last band to go on, and I was digging their sound, so we stayed to watch. This guy came over and was like, 'You guys took my booth", and after talking for a bit, we learned a. he was friends with the band yet hated the venue, and b. there were other places to go on a wednesday night. Cait's roomate from Marist had to catch the train, so she left, and Cait and I went to check out this place in the lower east side.
It was a really chill place; there was funky art on the walls, graffitti across walls in the back near the booths, and skateboard videos on the tvs. We chatted with the guys from the band for a bit, then the guy who's 'booth we had stolen' came and sat with cait and I. Turns out, this guy's a VJ for MTVU, and he was on the campus invasion tour. Random. Best line ever, "When did you get your braces off?" "...what?" "Sorry weird question, but... you have perfectly aligned teeth." His friend with these thick dreads (who looked a lot like an older version of Taylor anderson), said he could heal any injury with positive energy, and I figured hey, it couldn't hurt, so he tried to 'focus' on my foot to heal my toe, but after sitting with my foot in the air for ten minutes, my foot had done nothing different except fall asleep. mission accomplished- I couldn't feel my foot. This guy with some crazy accent came up to cait and was like, 'Hah, you know, I've seen many many things here in the lower east side, but never have I seen a man attempt to hypnotize his own foot" my response, 'excuse me, he was trying to hypnotize MY foot. thank you'. This guy continued to hit on cait while I talked to this guy with a full body suit of tattoos (well, I could only see the chest/arm/leg tattoos, and he said he's in the progess of connecting them all), but it was really nice work with a cool story- each section was something memorable from his time spent living in China- mostly new-school traditional work of paintings. I got a 'save me' text from cait, so I tried to call her as a distraction... didn't work so well when she picked up the phone and said, 'steph, why are you calling me??', so we bounced and ended our exciting/random night.
Thursday I started back at work, fun fun.
Friday night it started to get humid, and after going to dinner cait and I went to dylan's candy bar and I got lots and lots of gummies. banana gummy bears= crazy delicious.
I thought it'd be a good idea to walk back from 61st street to our dorms.... on 14th street. It was memorial day weekend, so the streets were really empty, it was weird.
This week I worked a lot, and went to soho for a little shopping.
My boss at the boutique has her own tv show on PBS where she does kid fitness, and she dresses up like a butterfly. That seems like the coolest job ever- running around dressed like a butterfly.
Yesterday bebe newirth (lilith from frazer/ the boss from how to lose a guy in 10 days) shopped in my store. she's very polite and seems nice in person.
The last two days it's been downpouring with crazy thunder and lightening. I went to the gym this morning and it was nice on the walk over there, and being the oregonian that I am I didn't think I'd need an umbrella if it started to rain... so on the walk back, when it was raining so hard that some of the subways were flooded, and the streets had a good foot of standing water.. I lost both my contacts, and couldn't see so I almost got hit by a car... twice. aaand I think that's about all for now, I'll try my best to post more often. I have a few pictures I'll try to post after work tomorrow. I'm loving NYC, it's really fun and there's a lot to do, but the downside is that I really don't know anyone around here, so it's a bit lonely. But kev-o and risaface are coming to visit next weekend, so more crazy fun times are sure to follow. :)
