The Wrong Foot and the Right Book

Woooot! My short story "The Wrong Foot" was published in Daily Science Fiction today - so you can read it free online! (And I love the art they commissioned to go with it. That was a wonderful surprise!)

It's a frothy, romantic comedy of manners (based on a skewed version of Cinderella), and it begins:

I just finished "Army Life On The Pacific; A Journal of the Expedition Against the Northern Indians, the Tribes of the COEUR D'ALENES, SPOKANS, AND PELOUZES, in the summer of 1858 by Lawrence Kip, Second Lieutenant of the Third Regiment of Artillery, U. S. Army" (All the spelling above, is exactly as printed in the book.)

It is a daily journal of the march and final battles that, due to the advent of the new, "longer range" rifles that the Native Americans were not aware of, caused the complete surrender/domination of the Indians along the Columbia River, around Walla Walla, and throughout the Spokane Falls and River area, of Washington And Oregon.

It is most revealing. It is not fiction. If one reads with this in mind, revelations of the realities of the struggle between the locals and invaders becomes very real!

I find these on Barnes and Noble. If you do a search for Free Nook Books, and the list them "lowest to highest price", you will find a lot of mysterious garbage at first, but then these older books begin to show. "Free" is the key! :o)

I also find books like this through searches on Project Gutenberg.

I'm about to start one of these:

Murder in the Gunroom by H. Beam Piper
Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie
American Indian Fairy Tales by Margaret Compton

So many books - So little time!
