This morning the doorbell rang at Hideously Early O'Clock. I groaned and covered my head, Patrick ran downstairs to answer the door...
...and then I saw what had come, and I stopped groaning! Instead, I started feeling tearful in the best possible way. Because it was a really, really awesome mail day, and MORE than worth being woken for. ;)
I'm not even going to feel embarrassed about how many photos I'm uploading here. I am bursting, and I need to share!
The first package was from my wonderful editor Emma at Templar Books:
What she wrote in the card was wonderful. And just seeing the "Made in Italy" notice on the bag made me feel faint with anticipation! :)
Then I opened up the bag, and ohhh...it's so beautiful:
It's solid and heavy in the most satisfying possible way, and the thick, creamy, unlined paper inside is perfect for writing on with my favorite fountain pen. And just check out the side view!
In the card, she wrote that this was to hold my next WIP. And oh, did it come with perfect timing! I sent out my last WIP to critique partners yesterday. I'd had a phone call with my agent the night before, trading ideas for what I should be thinking about next, in terms of my career. I'm full of uncertainty right now about exactly which ideas I should focus on next, in terms of pure story...
...but I have the most beautiful, magical notebook to write them in, when I'm ready. And suddenly I'm feeling more excited than nervous after all!
And then I found the second package, and ohhh. It came from
Emily Mah, and it was full of Kat rings!!!
These are adjustable silver rings, in the
"witch's heart" shape I linked to in the last entry - and could that shape be any more appropriate for my books, with my family of witches? More than that, in A Reckless Magick, Kat finds out things about her mother, the witch, which she had never even guessed at.
The lettering on the ring reads, in gorgeous script, Every...
...kind...
...of...
...MAGIC
Every kind of MAGIC.
Not only is that line so appropriate for Kat 3, and for the series as a whole (so many different kinds of magic, coming together!) - but these rings - and the whole experience of seeing my books reflected in such perfect jewelry...they really are. Every kind of magic. :)
It was a really wonderful mail day. And while I'm still having all the usual pre-publication terrors, and I'm still not sure of exactly what's coming next...
...I'm wearing my Kat ring as I type right now. (I'll give away another of the rings here on my blog on Monday! And I'll give away a third ring at my launch party at Bristolcon in just over three weeks.) I have my beautiful notebook sitting beside me, heavy and solid and waiting to be filled up with new stories.
It's a pretty magical day, all in all.

PS: Jim at YA Yeah Yeah interviewed me on his blog after reading A Reckless Magick, and he asked really good (spoiler-free!) questions. I ended up giving very long, chatty answers!
You can read them all here.
