Ohhh, thank you. Sadly, it looks like that data is just lost for good...but if I can just have a working computer again, at this point that'll count as a near-win!

I cannot wait to read it by the way. and I have a couple of friends who are going to be gifted with it just as soon as I can lay my sticky hands on copies since I know they will love it and it will be a wonderful gift for them.

Also - you can probably arrange to have apple pick the computor up by courier, take it to their workshops to be fixed - when I needed my ipod done they managed a 4 day turn around - you could possibly book it via the apple support website.

good luck - I know the hideousness all too well, since the same thing happened to me and I lost a chunk of the final draft of my PhD thesis.

Yay! You're entered in the drawing.

And that is REALLY good to hear about apple - what with the cost of fuel, repeating a 3-hour drive over and over again REALLY starts to add up financially....but OUCH! I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been to lose that chunk of your thesis!

it was a nightmare - and thankfully most of it was backed up - but I lost a lot of formatting and the really annoying and time consuming bit of pasting figures into the text.

3 hours is a long drive indeed.

I was pretty impressed with the courier pick-up - and if you can't get back for a week, it might be a good option - I believe it's where the repairs go anyway if they can't do the fix in the shop.

and thank you for offering this draw. very exciting.
