Chapter 8

"Hongki."

Hongki blinked. He was bored. Oh so bored. He had taken residence in the practice rooms in the music block, he had all but finished his final composition, and the score was sat on the piano. His forehead was resting on the upright back of the piano, his fingers hovering over the ivory keys.

"Hongki."

He pressed his finger lightly against an A, the quiet note reverberating around the small room. He pressed it again, harder this time, the note sounding louder.

"Hongki!"

Hongki sat upright as he felt a hand come to rest on his shoulder, pulling him from his thoughts. He looked up at the intruder. "Heechul-hyung."

"What are you doing here?" Heechul sat on the piano bench next to Hongki.

"Finishing my composition." Hongki explained. "I had nothing better to do."

"You're not hanging out in the cafe? Stalking that poor boy?" Heechul bit back a laugh. He was the only one that Hongki had told about Jonghun, and the not so little crush he had on the slightly younger male.

"His name is Jonghun, and he's not been working recently."

Heechul held up a takeaway coffee cup, "I just came from there, and, unless I'm mistaken, I was served by him."

Hongki stood quickly, gathering his score and pushing it into his bag. "Hyung, he had glasses right?"

"Yeah, he had glasses on today."

Hongki paid no attention to the latter part of Heechul's sentence. "Hyung, I have to go. I'll see you around."

Hongki all but ran to the cafe, and for once was glad for the small queue that had gathered. He panted quietly, trying to get his breath back before he would speak to Jonghun. He glanced to the counter, and wondered why he had tried to breathe in the first place. Jonghun was stood, a smile on his face, his glasses framing his dark eyes perfectly. Breathtaking. Hongki stared unashamedly, not even bothering to ready his money to pay for the drink, wanting to extend his time with Jonghun best he could.

"Can I take your order?"

Hongki grinned as Jonghun spoke, watching the other male busy himself with his order book.
"Iced Americano please." Hongki ordered, "and you, when you get a break."

Jonghun looked up at the strange request, knowing that there was only one person that could have made it. "Hongki."

Hongki smiled, his eyes catching Jonghun's for the briefest of moments. "I'll be sat at my usual table. I have work to complete." Hongki pulled out his wallet, flicking through bills and handing payment over to Jonghun.

Jonghun counted the money quickly, "there's too much here."

"Not if you add your espresso to the order." Hongki winked before stepping away from the counter, noticeably happier than before.

Jonghun was distracted. His eyes kept shifting view, landing on Hongki. He had messed up more than his fair share of orders over the duration of his shift, and his manager was watching his every move.

"For goodness sake, Jonghun, take a break."

Jonghun looked at his manager, ringing his final order into the register. "Thanks!" He set about making himself an espresso, more than excited to spend time with Hongki.

Hongki stared at the score in front of him. It was his final composition for the music aspect of his degree. He tapped along to the beat of the music, the notes playing in his head, some escaping under his breath.

He sighed before placing the score back in his bag. There was something off with his composition, but he was unsure what.

Hongki groaned, reaching and bringing his glass to his mouth, only to found that he had already drank the contents.

"Need a refill?"

Hongki smiled as he heard the voice, his worries about the composition leaving his head almost instantaneously. "Jonghun."

Jonghun placed the fresh drink in front of Hongki, before taking the seat opposite him. "You need to stop distracting me."

"I'm doing nothing!" Hongki protested, lifting the cup to his mouth and taking a sip, grimacing when he realised he hadn't added any sugar.

Jonghun flushed, "just your presence is starting to affect me."

Hongki smirked, so Jonghun really wasn't avoiding him. "I haven't seen you recently."

"I had an assignment due for school." Jonghun explained, "worth a chunk of my final grade. I stopped pretty much everything that wasn't eating, sleeping and school."

"Saedi said you had another job that you swapped shifts with her for." Hongki muttered, causing Jonghun to choke on his espresso.

"Yeah, I don't get many hours, but it pays well." Jonghun explained. "They needed me to fill in for someone who was sick."

"What is your other job?" Hongki asked, glad to make conversation with Jonghun.

Jonghun faltered for a moment, "I'm not telling you, after all, I have to keep some mystery." Jonghun lifted the small espresso cup to his lips again, halting the conversation. "You didn't look happy just now." Jonghun tried his hardest to change the topic of conversation.

"Just my final composition." Hongki explained, "I thought that I had almost completed it, but it somehow doesn't seem right."

"Do you mind if I see it?" Jonghun asked, reaching his hand over the table, willing Hongki to give him his work.

"Why not?" Hongki reached into his bag and pulled out the score, his fingers brushing Jonghun's as he passed the score over. Hongki smiled as he felt the spark travel between their fingers.

Jonghun blushed, scanning over the main parts of the composition, the piano and guitar were the main instruments, the interaction between the two of them was seamless. Hongki had written parts for the drum, bass guitar, even a string quartet was included, adding extra depth and crescendo when needed. "It's good." Jonghun said finally, the piece playing in his head. "But it feels as though you're trying too hard, that there is too much." Jonghun placed the score on the table, pointing as he spoke. "I don't think that the strings should be throughout the whole of the piece, just use them to add accent."

Hongki glanced at the score, Jonghun had a point. "I guess."

"The final bridge seems too hectic." Jonghun added. "You have every instrument playing, I would cut it down to just the drums, piano and bass, really focus on the main theme." Jonghun looked up at Hongki, seeing the panic-stricken look on his face. "I'm sorry."

"I gave you permission to critique when I passed my score to you." Hongki said, "your points are valid, and anyone marking the score would say the same. Thank you."

"It's still amazing." Jonghun reached over the table, resting his hand on Hongki's, squeezing it slightly. "You are an amazing composer, Hongki."

Hongki's eyes met Jonghun's, seeing admiration and something he couldn't quite put his finger on. "I'm glad you started to work here." Hongki twisted his hand, so that their fingers were intertwined.

"Me too."

"JONGHUN! Stop flirting with your boyfriend and get back to work!"

Jonghun blushed as he glanced over at his boss. "He's not my boyfriend!"

Hongki chuckled, "not yet anyway!" He added, removing his hand from Jonghun's. "Get back to work, I'll be around a while longer, I have some amendments to make." He gestured to his composition before grinning. "Go!"
