I'm marking those dates on my mental calendar.
July 21 might be the biggest thing yet to happen in my budding career.I won't jinx it, so don't change that channel :P
July 25 will be the day I troop to the court in an organized game with my GMA 7 reporter colleagues as brothers on the hardwood, going up against other teams from the Newsroom. Thing is, I think they're playing me at the POINT.
Im guessing Ivan Mayrina's going to man the slot if he signs up. Team Captain Oscar Oida will be playing 4. Newcomer Cedric Castillo moves like a 3, leaving Raffy Tima, Jun Veneracion, John Consulta, Chino Trinidad (if he joins us) and myself at the guard spots.
John strikes me as a jump shooting guard, Sir Raffy probably a tweener at the 4-3 or 3-2. Sir Chino probably plays the 2 and 3 coz he looks pretty strong for his size. Sir Jun Vene looks like he plays guard but I'm not sure if he plays the 1. I've dabbled as the playmaker in pick up games here at my neighborhood, but it's usually me driving to the rim and dropping a dime to the big man or kicking out to the open shooter.
So that's going to be a problem for me. I want to kick serious ass, but I have NEVER played point guard in my entire life and I have a STRONG feeling no one plays point guard from the list above. When I was a kid I played power forward, then I transitioned to the two coz everyone around me got taller and I stayed put at 5'7". I've always been a shooting guard. I'm not exactly the best ball handler around (although I've been working hard on the handles since college). People see me as the sports reporter, a "Robin" to Sir Chino Trinidad's "Batman", if you will, so I gotta back the image up haha. Last full court game I played, I finished with 10 points and 3 assists as a 2 guard finishing the break.
Although I think I'm a decent passer. I didn't score a lot back in college, but I always had 2-4 assists and 2 steals per game in the IAC. I was fortunate to have played with some very talented scorers so I got pretty used to working the rock and getting it to my teammates when they're in the best position to score - staple duty of the 1, right? My brother and I are a pretty decent two-man combo in a half court offense - I get him the ball, he scores in the paint. We actually win 2-on-2 games in the neighborhood thanks to that formula.
Problem is I don't have great handles full court. All my life I've never been the guy who took it into the attack zone, except when I get a steal and go for the breakaway.
Hmm. I got two weeks to work on my handles from baseline to baseline.
But if any of yáll are willing to give me a few pointers on where the point guard should be on the court at any time, please holler at your boy. Haha.

Yáll shoulda seen my main man JC Intal throwing down a SICK one handed slam dunk in the face of Dondon Hontiveros in Game 2 of the PBA finals. Dude got that high-flying swagger back since he got traded to Ginebra.
I predict a 7 game finish. The believer in me says Ginebra in 7, if they figure out how to offset the height and mosntrous rebounding disadvantage they have against the tall and talented San Miguel frontline.
See yáll at the games!
