I have been out several times in search of salmon and my luck hasn't been to good. The water is way to warm. I headed out last week because we had alot of rain come down in hope of early kings. But the word early was was an understatement. I think it's earliar then early. Anyways, I got out to the river and didn't see anything but thought maybe it would take another night for the fish to get up to the dam. So I headed to the pier. I walked out there about 5 and started casting. Fished for 40 minutes and just when I was about to give up I got slammed. At first it started pulling drag but ended up being the biggest sheephead I have ever seen, go figure. Anyways, I packed it up and headed in to see if those kings made it up to the river. Nothing was around.
All this was last thursday.
Sunday my good friend Jason invited me out on his dad's boat. We set up in 150 feet of water. We had one knockoff before I was into a fish. A big 16 lb darken male made it's way to the net after a legthy battle. Came on a cut bait rig.
We had 4 more knock offs the rest of the day but none of them ever stuck.
The next mournin I went again in search of early kings. Seen one fish at the first stop but that was it. Then I figured I would head home. On the way out I stopped at another hole jus tto check it out and there laid 6 kings. I gave it a try with two other guys. The fish were very spooked.
Around 12 I snagged way past the end of the drift. While waiding out to retrive my rig my fly box slipped out of my shorts that I was waiding in. So if anyone finds a clear fly box below two tubes on the little manistee I would appreciate it back. Thanks!!!
Anyways, with no flies I decided to head on home. It was a nice day to be out but I sure wish the fish were around. It's nice however not having the people around.
