First work experience was in a (separate) sixth form college library, I was already volunteering in the school library so I suppose they thought it would be appropriate. That was quite fun though a little daunting as I was only year 10 s all the borrowers were two years older than me. May well have helped me get my part time job which led directly to my current full time job.
Second work experience was in Woolworths. Not as good as the first, lots of standing up and wandering around. Refilled the pic'n'mix from giant sacks which smelt disgusting and at times made me feel like gagging.
Sixth form work experience at Worcester Records Office. Spent two days in the main records office at county hall. Saw lots of really old stuff, including the book where Shakespeare's marriage register was before someone stole it. Got sent to modern records for a day, this had stuff was five years old and might be needed by different departments. It was sooo dull! The woman there kept anxiously assuring me that it was normally busier. So I spent so time deciphering people's signatures and messing about on a wheely chair. Final two days spent in the family history centre, lots of people came in to use the internet (much like library work) but I got to see micro films/fiche and correct some transcriptions, it was interesting. Was going to apply there for a job, as my one at the time was crap, however I'd got a new job by the time the position came up.
Having had work experience people at work I have to say that I think some of the schools put no thought into where they assign the kids. For library work you have to have a good grasp of English, you have to be able to talk to a wide variety of people about various things, you have to know the alphabet. We've had shy people who had real problems putting books in order, you'd thin the school would know about these things. Also it's can be fairly physical (you're standing up most of the day and have to do a reasonable amount of carrying) so it's tiring if you're used to school. But I guess the same is true of many jobs.
