Nicholas brushed his fingers across the scars on Liam’s chest, looking down at him as he lay in the bed beside him. There were shadows and half-shadows all around the room, all sorts of spectors creeping out of them to plant seeds of doubt in Nicholas’s mind.
“Don’t think about it,” he said quietly to himself.
The scars were his fault. Liam had almost died because of Nicholas.
Yet Liam loved him anyway, enough to stay with him, enough to live with him, enough to risk everything for him.
Nicholas smiled, feeling guilty and unworthy, leaning down to place a gentle kiss against the small, white circles, one by Liam’s collar, one on his sternum, and one at his hip.
“You alright, Nicky?” Liam whispered suddenly, reaching up to brush away a stray tear from Nicholas’s cheek.
“Yeah,” Nicholas replied, lying down beside him again, “I’m fine.”

“I’d say that’s a bit tall for a Butterman,” Frank chuckled. He saw that Danny was entirely serious, and so continued, “Well, Danny, it’s up to you, of course, but your mother and I would like you to come back to Sandford after college, you know. Just to stay close. She is devoted to you, after all, but I know she’d never be able to leave the Church behind. She has so many friends, you know. You wouldn’t want to go upsetting her, now would you?”
“I s’pose not,” Danny replied, trying not to seem as crestfallen as he really was. Religion over science. What a trade.
