One of the reasons that I love whole foods is because they have the most interesting selection of specialty produce.
Google images of Buddha Hand lemon and you'll see why it's one of my favorite fruits. It's just plain Sci Fi all over!
There's no actual "fruit" to it, it's really just citron. The cool thing about them though, is that you can use just about the whole thing as lemon zest...even the white part (it's not bitter like standard lemon pith).
And the smell.......Oooooooooo, the smell......it's a new dimension of lemon-y-ish-ness. They're not cheap but they are fun and when you zest an arm you end up with one of the world's best sources of lemon zest for all things bakery :-)
I'm zesting the whole thing tomorrow and storing it in the freezer. Yes, I know, the zest will lose some of it's texture but, zested fine enough, that shouldn't be an issue for future use.
