The pumpkins are, fortunately, fake. I found from previous experience that working with living pumpkin material is hard on the pattern one uses to trace the design on said pumpkin. Namely, if your design is on paper, the juiciness of the pumpkin tends to shred the paper before you can get in any good cuts.
Enter Michael's fake pumpkins. They are a little more resistant to carving but with a good exacto blade and a lot of patience the results (see above) can be pretty darn good.
Plus, if they survive storage, they can be added onto later (i.e. additional princess pumpkins and sparkly accessories which are paramount to my 6-year old's girly-girl halloween). Hubby is crushed that she doesn't have as much enthusiasm for ghostly ghouly halloween as he does but he's charmed nonetheless. And, gee, so am I ::grin::
