So, I watched Dead Man's Chest yesterday afternoon. Quite the fun. I'm assuming that by now if you've wanted to see the movie, you have by now already. But in case you haven't and still want to...consider this your warning for spoilers mixed in throughout the remainder of the post.
Let's just start off by saying that I already knew what to expect thanks to various spoilers and video clips, so it was kinda like watching it a 2nd time...even though this was in fact, my first time seeing it. That been said, I definately was not disappointed. There was a surprise ending to it, but if you were paying attention, you might have seen it coming. In the scene where Jack and company give Tia Dalma (the witchcraft lady) the undead monkey, you'll notice the monkey goes to a place inside where there are boots...and seems to have calmed down a bit...why? Because of whose boots they are, most likely. Watch it again, you'll see what I mean. I don't believe he was alive at the time and that Dalma needed the monkey to bring him back.
My guess is since said person didn't die at sea, Dalma could bring him back to life, wheras Jack Sparrow was taken down at sea, Dalma can't bring him back as he's under control of Davy Jones, which is why the crew needs a captain to go to unchartered waters and so on and so forth. That, and I also believe that Dalma has an agenda of her own which is why she brought back formerly dead guy.
James Norrington returning was nice...wants to regain a bit of honor, which leads to a 3 way battle between him, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner while Ragetti and Pintel try to run away with the chest to remove temptation from the battlers. Quite a fun sequence...as was most of the movie.
I think I figured out the whole whipping Will Turner scene. I believe as punishment for a mistake on the Flying Dutchmen (like what Turner did), you get whipped by whoever it is that was going to do it. However, Will's father wants to take the whippings instead. Unfortunately, Davy Jones doesn't give Bootstrap that choice and instead gives him the whip. Bootstrap doesn't want to whip his son, but somewhat as an act of compasion, he does knowing that if someone else did it, it would be far worse for his son.
Speaking of Davy Jones, I have to give props/DAP/whatever you want to call it to the actor who played him. Very well done performance and I look forward to seeing him again in POTC 3, which many sites have listed as At World's End and that comes out in late May 2007.
