Yesterday we celebrated my aunt's 80th birthday. It's strange to think that she's now older than her mother, my grandma, got to be. She died shortly before her 80th birthday.
The celebration was nice, quiet with not a lot of people in our family restaurant (the owner is my mom's cousin). Uneventful until one of the older friends of my aunt passed out and an ambulance had to be called. She was better, eventually; the paramedics took her with them, but at least she was sitting upright in a portable wheelchair when they took her.

Peru is having an almost nationwide state of emergency. Lots of rainfall had the rivers swell and caused mudslides that washed away houses, roads and bridges. I contacted Rosa, and she says they haven't had water for a week, foodstuffs that used to get to Lima via now destroyed roads need to be flown in and everything costs five times as much. She's rather well off, she has a brick house, but people up on the hills sometimes only have four wooden panels and a corrugated roof. Mom and I sent her some money, I can only hope she uses some for herself and her family and does not spend everything on everybody else like she usually does.

life, peru
