I read a book by an American who spent some time in Germany before going back to the US (where he's now married to a German woman). Actually, it was two books, one for Americans who are visiting Germany and one for Germans visiting the US. They're on the satirical side, but there was one section about presidential elections. It gave me a much better grasp on why the US very often seem indecisive about who should be their next president when for most Germans it's absolutely clear that it must be the Democrat. And especially Obama. According to polls more than 90 % of the Germans would vote for him, and less than 5 % for Romney.
The book did not explain why the whole thing sometimes seems more like a popularity contest to me.
Some tv stations are doing a "long night of election", which is always very interesting, but I think I'll go to bed soon.
I bought wool today and will attempt another knitted hat. I did one a few years ago but it was a very thin thread and the resulting hat isn't very warm. The wool wasn't cheap, but it's an awesome color. And my mom will make me a matching scarf.
I was also at the art and crafts store to get some supplies for Christmas cards - which I have decided to make myself, after all. I was wearing a scarf made with that wool that has pompons in it. It's soft and warm (
_bettina_, you gave it to me for Christmas a while ago), and the two women at the cashier were fascinated by it because the scarfs they had seen made out of the same material were apparently stiff as a board. They told their boss, too; on my way out the door I just heard them talking, then went back in for a second to let him feel it, too. It was quite a funny moment.
