Okay, this might sound like bitching disguised as a question, but I'm really not sure anymore: If you write a story in present tense and something happened before, it's still correct to use the whatever-the-name-of-the-tense-is with "did" and "has done", right? Because I read so many stories where the author jumps back two tenses instead of one and uses "had done". Like, "Michael is thinking about what he ate for breakfast" is correct, but not "Michael is thinking about what he had eaten for breakfast", right?

It's almost like I have to check every now and again that yes, there is still a difference between "lie" (as in lie down) and "lay". But that would indeed be bitching.

I have an inexplicably urge to write a (short) story where Jensen cheated on Jared and now Jared's left him and Jensen goes into the bathroom in the middle of the night and the light's too bright and his shelf is half empty and he notices all these little things, how his toothbrush looks alone in the cup, his aftershave is half empty and there's a smudge in the corner of the mirror, and nothing makes sense without Jared anymore. It'd start with that scene, actually, and there'd be flashbacks to when they were happy, little memories of how Jared snores when he falls asleep on his back and how he looked coming in from a run with the dogs, and how Jensen told him that he cheated. Of course it's got a happy (or at least hopeful) ending, because I can't have them stay apart.

But oh, I'm almost done with two (!) others, I need to finish those first.
