Hey, help me out, friendslist. The Steve Carlson Band: How many people/instruments are there? I mean, Steve and his guitar, obviously (probably?), but what else? And are there any pictures from club shows, somewhere?

ETA: Um, forgive me for being so ignorant, but I just checked wikipedia about the subject, and he's playing all solo as well?

Oh, well, okay, I can try to help with that, though "typical" is kind of a broad category. At the Hotel Cafe, which is where Steve's played just about every time I've seen him, the stage is set up from the table area by about 2 feet. It's small, but big enough to fit a drum kit in the back and three players in the front. There's also an upright piano over on the side, though it's mostly used for setting drinks on. The audience (at small tables) is close enough (in the front) to just about reach out and grab the guys. There are, I think, 3 sets of tables and then the bar area in back, as well as standing room behind the tables. A typical audience would be probably 40 at tables, and maybe 30-50 standing? More if the place is packed, less if it's a slow night. The guys on stage certainly can see people in the back of the room, but then again if they weren't looking they could overlook people, too, particularly if it's relatively crowded.

The Viper Room, where I know Kane has played before, though I haven't seen them there, is a little bit bigger, with (as I recall) booths around the sides and standing space in the middle and at the back bar. The Whisky doesn't have any seating downstairs that I can recall, and the stage is definitely bigger there (and at the Viper Room) than at the Hotel Cafe.

When Steve plays the Hotel Cafe, it's with SCB, which is presently Jonah on drums, Steve Dress on bass (standup and electric), and Dave Olivas on sax. One time I saw them play there when Dave was out of town, so it was just the other three (or maybe Jonah wasn't even there either? I don't remember). I've seen Steve play honest-to-goodness solo just sitting in at L Scorpion a couple of weeks ago (though come to think of it, Steve Dress and Jonah ended up grabbing a mike for some backup harmonies even then). And of course when Kane plays "acoustic," it's just Steve and Chris and Steve's guitar.

Does that answer any of your questions? Raise other ones?

That was perfect, thank you so much!

Oh yeah. I was lucky to see them like that last year.
