I've come to notice that there are four kinds of Neon Genesis Evangelion viewers:
1. Those who really didn't get it at all to begin with and really don't like it... to the point where they think they're superior because they're bucking the trend.
2. Those who love Evangelion for ONLY the giant robot, idolistic, fan service aspects of it, and absolutely hate the last two episodes... either because they didn't get it, don't want to get it, or because it didn't have any giant robot fan service in it.
3. Those who love Evangelion who land somewhere between #2 and the following #4... as in they don't necessarily hate the last two episodes, but really aren't into them much.
4. Those who love Evangelion FOR the last two episodes, and would still love it if all the superficial sci-fi giant robot action explosions were stripped from the series and it was only about a bunch of people and their problems (a la The Royal Tenenbaums).
I consider myself a #4 viewer, with some bits of #3 in there. I gotta admit I love the superficial giant robot bits.... but the last two episodes for me are probably what separates it from everything else out there, and the kind of story telling it had is something I want to strive towards emulating.
