i was getting ready to go to bed, but the excitement of the past 15 minutes and the sheer ridiculousness of it all made me decide to post. well.. that and the fact that i can't quite sleep in my room yet.
i live on the ground floor. i didn't realize how much of a problem insects were until this year for some reason. perhaps the exterminator came by before i moved in last year, or maybe the other kind of raid is more effective... but whatever the case, this summer has been war. maybe it's because i keep my apartment warmer than i used to... anyway, since i live on the ground floor, the bugs have an easier time sneaking into my apartment. but i can deal with a few bugs. a ladybug on the blinds... the occasional fly... those are cool with me. solitary praying mantis.. strange, but whatever. colony of ants in the kitchen, laundry room, and dining room/living room.. not cool. big ass centipedes in the bedroom definitely not cool. but i'm ok... i've got my can of raid (clove scented, even). so this weekend there was the mass genocide of ants. i managed to get them out of the kitchen and keep them from coming from under the front door (i hope). i'm still working on the laundry room... i made the mistake of keeping my trash in there for a couple of days after my party last weekend... and now they're coming in from a hole that is on the other side of the dryer that i can't get to. but i've got them contained. but i've used pretty much all of my raid taking care of the ants. when what do i see tonight? a centipede next to my computer... so i take it out with the raid (centipede, not computer). i definitely need to get a new can at this point, but i'm not concerned.
so i'm going about my business.. getting ready for bed, etc. i took a shower, and as i'm drying my hair, i see (and by see, i mean can barely make out) a huge ass mass in the corner resembling a huge ass centipede. and i curse myself for having used the last of the raid on a whim on some ants in the laundry room just a few minutes before. as i'm staring at the thing across the room to see if it really is a centipede, i'm considering my options. i could try whacking it with a book, but i didn't want to stain the wall. i decided to see if there was enough raid left in the can to get it. there definitely wasn't. there was only enough to scare it so that it went higher up the wall where i couldn't reach. so i went to my supplies to see if there was anything else that would work as a bug killer. i found windex and wd-40. not knowing what to do, i went back to my room to survey the situation. the damn bug climbed up to the ceiling, where it knew i couldn't reach it. and every time i left the room, it was getting closer and closer to the door. but i knew i wasn't letting this one go. i'd had enough. i very briefly considered trying to get it with body splash... because it has alcohol and wouldn't make my room unbreathable, but then i realized that i probably needed something that was aerosol. so i settled for wd-40. i really didn't know whether the wd-40 would actually kill it.. for all i know, it could just have lubed it up and made it easier for it to squeeze through the cracks where ever that let it get in. but i was willing to try.
i took my can of wd-40, stuck on the little handy nozzle that comes with it for extra reach, took aim, and fired. the first shot knocked it to the floor, where it immediately started running. at me! fuck! so i kept spraying it, alternately yelling "fuck!" and/or "die!" (i don't quite remember) because it kept running at me, but finally it stopped moving. feeling victorious, i left the room to put the wd-40 away, and when i got back, it had moved. so i shot it again... and then i vacuumed it. and thus ends my ordeal for the night. so i hope, at least. i've got the a/c turned up so that i can ventilate my room, and i'm sleeping on the couch tonight, because i really don't want to inhale wd-40 fumes. but i thought i'd share. i wd-40'd a centipede to death. =)
and now i'm going to sleep. provided i don't have to wd-40 anything else.
