It's a new year, but not really a new me. School still really stinks, it thinks it's cool to have a "late semester" so I'm still taking finals and doing presentations now. The last one is on Friday though. It's really very terrifying to talk about weather phenomena in front of the most famous climate and atmospheric science people in the country, not Willard Scott or Al Roker, but people that have the world record in lowest pH found in the ocean ever (is that important? I... guess?) On that note, I have noticed a few large differences between most people at school and me, the first being that they are very very smart, the second being that they are all 20 - 22 years of age, not that it's that big of a difference, but they've been in school their whole lives and I had a real job and am interested in keeping a real job, which leads me to the biggest difference, they all want to stay in academia and write papers and teach classes for the rest of their lives, while I want to get in, get out, and get a job, quick and dirty. I don't think the professors love that about me, but I hope we can all reach an understanding, and soon. Because it sucks. It also seems that people's age here is inversely proportional to their intelligence. I have been in classes with undergrads whose questions in class resulted in a complete revision of a lecture, while older people such as myself struggle to keep their heads above water.
The only thing that really helps is the constant reminder of what is important in life, such as my sister Katie giving birth to my 2nd niece, Aubrey Grace Harrington. And Dorian just 1 test result away from becoming a full-fledged CPA. And my favorite tv shows becoming new again this week. Just keeping my priorities in check :)
I just caught the Departed a little late, and boy was that movie intense. It brought me back to 10 years ago when I, like many other 15 year old girls, wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to dump all his model girlfriends and marry me (don't act like you girls don't know what I'm talking about!) We also saw "Children of Men" which I really can't recommend enough. It was definitely the best movie I saw all year, the kind that really stays with you. I don't want to spoil anything about it here, just go see it.
Anyway I hope everyone else's new year has started out well and continues to be great.
