Well, having been thrown through a loop at being asked for an accompaniment CD rather than sheet music, I finally got something together (granted, it sounded kind of silly singing this song - Someone Like You - from the beginning to 90 seconds through, but it was something) and showed up for my audition. I sit and listen to five other people and I'm person number 6. It's a very laid-back audition and nobody is really following the traditional guidelines I'm used to.
I walk onto the stage - say something funny into the mic, people laugh, my nerves are eased a bit - well, this woman at the casting table starts asking me questions - "where are you from?" "oh, georgia?" - well, she got to "what are you singing?" just as my song begins. And this accompaniment track doesn't grant me a intro - one note and I'm in. Except this time I was sat staring confused at the lady at the table thinking "Should I answer her? Should I sing? Should I ask the sound guy to restart the song? I've already missed three words!" So my version of Someone Like You began "... windows, watch life go by".
But nay, tis not all.
About halfway through the first verse what happens? My CD skips! It pretty much stayed in the same spot so I sang through it thinking "Don't cry, don't cry". I kept repeating that in my head until after the first chorus it skips again taking the music to some random place in the song.
I'm surprised I didn't cry.
The guys at the table said I have a very theatrical, dramatic voice and it's really obvious I do musical theatre mostly. And lots of "oh that wasn't your fault" crap.
Crap.
There goes another one.
The dance portion was fun though. I almost left thinking it was hopeless, but I swallowed my pride, threw on my dance clothes and shook it with the rest of them.
*shrug*
The days of auditions, I think I spend the rest of the day on a high until late at night right before I go to bed. That's when I just start beating myself up for every little thing. But you know what, it's true that if you can get the nerve to put yourself in the position that auditioning puts you in, you've done so much already. You have balls if you can do that.
I have balls.
