"If they're keeping you from sleepin', sounds like they might be kind of a big deal," I say. I think about lightin' up another cigarette and then decide not to. I look up at the sky, seein' the first traces of stars as dusk falls. "I won't pry if you don't wanna talk about it, though."
"It doesn't seem fair that you should have to dream about it over and over," I say softly. "I'm sorry, Maddie." I realize I still haven't moved my hand from her shoulder, but she doesn't seem to mind, so maybe it's okay.
"Yeah, listen to you," I say. "Since I'm forbidden to throw myself over, we gotta stop being depressing. Think about happy things. Like--." I pause, my eyes searchin' the sky.
"Look." I lean close, my cheek next to hers as I point at a string of stars that have emerged in the darkened sky. "Doesn't that look just like... a harp, or maybe somebody's tennis shoe?"
I chuckle. "I've been told I was deranged before," I say. "No, see, the outline's kinda harp-shaped. Or it could be a shoe turned on its side." I'm pullin' this stuff out of my ass to try and make her smile. It's kinda fun.
