amberdreams asked: what's the best place you've ever visited so far, and what's the place you haven't been but are most desperate to see?
i've been a very lucky little traveler and i've been to a lot of really wonderful places!! but the best was probably florence. it was the first time i'd ever been out on my own in a foreign place and learning how to navigate it by myself was such an awesome experience. the story i always tell about florence is the Hat Vendor Story here we go
so i went to italy with my dad, my dad's then-boss and then-best-friend, and said boss' surrogate daughter (long story about that.) she and i were about the same age. we stayed in florence about 5 or 6 days i think and our hotel was right around the corner from where the san lorenzo street market begins. so the first day she and i were allowed to explore by ourselves we passed by this (cute) hat vendor dude who in typical italian-trying-to-pander-to-americans style started flirting with us and telling us how he would make us "smile every day, every 24 hours!!" if we bought his hats. we told him no thank you and laughed about it and continued on
on our way back to the hotel near the end of the day we saw him again only this time he was at an italian ice stand, and when he saw us he kinda jokingly called out to us "what, are you stalking me??"
THE NEXT DAY we went out with our dads and he saw us and continued flirting, which we thought was pretty funny but our dads were scowling like no other god bless 'em
THE LAST DAY we were there she and i went out on our own again and on our way back to the hotel she suggested we duck behind the market stalls so as not to run into the hat vendor guy. so we're creeping behind these market stalls feeling very sneaky when hat vendor guy LEAPS out at us and throws his arms open and yells I AM HERE FOR YOU! and my friend screamed and fell over and afterwards he shook our hands and we all had a good laugh and never saw him again
Hat Vendor Man u were a treasure i hope ur hat stall is doing well
so besides the precious hat vendor man florence was just. really lovely. after a week of wandering through ruins in the south of italy it was really nice to be in a renaissance city for once with no ruins. we saw the duomo (prettiest church ever) and ate the best paninis of my life and it was just generally a lovely lovely place, i'd kill to go back.
as for a place i'm desperate to see, i really really want to see the scottish highlands, and i'm never going to be happy until i spend some time in iceland. i feel like if i went to iceland i'd come home carrying their niceness with me forever. and in america i'd really love to see the badlands/north dakota and also the pacific northwest.
