A Post and Pictures

Nov 13, 2008 22:02

I'm posting because livejournal is a community I believe in. I may not show it much, but I am here.

Lots of lj-ers have dropped out, and  I miss them.

So... I'm sitting here listening to Moonbeam (Penny's birthday hamster) spin his wheel round and round. Oddly, it's not very annoying. Listening to some bizarre light rock/electronica song, too. ( Read more... )

It's that "walking/biking distance to a bustling town" that makes all the difference in the world. Trust me.

Yes! The ideal situation.

Although, frankly, I really don't mind isolation all that much.

You oughta join the "No Child Left Inside" coalition. When I get a kid, I will most certainly take him/her camping. I didn't do enough of that when I was kid, but when I did, it was memorable and fun! Is Nate P the one who was from Arkansas? what is a skinwalker? Is it anything like a squonk?

The weirdest animal I have seen in nature... I saw a roadrunner in TExas and that was pretty awesome. There was a mangy opossum on my porch once and it was really funky looking,,, because it was injured. OH I KNOW, I saw a three-legged deer once in my driveway. I also saw a limping coyote in the snow. Why are all my weird animals deformed somehow? I guess weird = deformed?

Hmm... I will look into that coalition.

Yes, Nate P is the one from Arkansas and his new book is the best one yet; it's getting awards left and right.

You should do a search for skinwalkers... They're a legendary creature of the deserts-- I think the Navajos had a detailed explanation for them. Skinwalkers walk on all fours, with looooong legs that look like skin stretched over stilts. They have ashen human-looking faces and if you make eye contact they will steal your soul. Maybe some of our friends who have dwelt in the desert will have more to say.

Opossums are so weird-looking when they're in perfect shape, I'll bet a deformed one would scare the bejeesus out of me.

We didn't see any skin walkers but at a point we thought that we did. Not really, but we saw a bizarre creature in the white sands missile range in New Mexico once. We thought it might be a skin walker and we thought that our souls might have escaped us but alas it was only an African Oryx. It turns out New Mexico is CRAZY and they import weird animals so they can have hunts on their missile range....New Mexico...wow ( ... )

i've encouraged my sis to take her girls camping. i think maybe they have camped in the backyard which is a great start if you ask me. i have thought many a times about how i will camp with little ones. i have read parts of a book that gave tips about camping and backpacking with different age kids. it told handy things that i'm sure parents could figure out, but i had no idea like how far different ages could be expected to hike or even ride along in one of those cool baby backpacks. do you have one of those. i expect to have one of those after i bear children, although i like simple wraps too. but would that be adequate for hiking? someday i will have babies like you. though i'm glad i don't know, it will be a joyous time when i do.

ps i loved savannah when i was there for a day. beautiful city.
can't think of the strangest animal i've seen in nature.

I do have a backpack carrier, and several other types of carriers. To me, the simple ring sling tops them all, and we use it for hiking and everything else.

Yeah, I'll bet your kids will be rad. And you'll have a blast.

I find that camping with friends is best. It's too bad that you guys live so far away. We even have a new tent and sleeping bags that haven't been used. Last summer was too home improvementy. Next summer will have to have more outdoor adventure.

Dude, we could totally meet half way! It'd be a little drive (3-4 hrs) for both of us, but I think it would definitely be worth it. Hell, we just drove 4 hours to Savannah for a one night camp.

Co-camping would be a lot of fun... We'll talk more on the other side of winter.
