It has been way too long. I used to be so good at writing-- mainly due to the fact that I was writing every other day. I solemnly swear to adhere to a strict writing schedule. Besides, so much has happened in the last few weeks, I need to share with my adoring public.
At the very end of August I quit my job in California and began a week-long road trip to the east coast. I was aiming for New York City, but a plethora of friends and their overabundant hospitality made Philadelphia a 5-week stop. The past five weeks have been not unlike a revitalizing holiday. I feel smarter, braver, more complete. My friends have been wonderful and I hate to feel like I'm imposing on their hospitality, but I really want this city to work out for me career-wise, so I will stay until I'm either employed or evicted.
My good friend and I were discussing the unpopularity of Philadelphia as a life-choice. He is from NYC, where the coolest thing you can do is grow up and move to LA. I'm from LA where the cool thing to do is grow up and move to NYC. For both of us, there seems to be a stigma among our friends and family against Philly. His theory, which I am ready to support, is that this is all due to a lack of cinematic glossing and idealization of the Philly metro area. The city is always grim and grey and dirty in "Rocky," "Philadelphia," and the M. Night Shyamalan oeuvre. While NYC has the romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "You've Got Mail", and California has everything from 90210 to "Clueless", Philly has nothing really romantic or fun to offer on screen. [Not to say that It's Always Sunny isn't a great show! It's just not enticing anyone to live here.] In person, however, this city is really lovely!
Unfortunately, the job search has not gone well enough to grant me a longer stay, so I am looking to expand my horizons. It will be sad to leave the Philly crowd behind, but better to do so on my own terms than cause an irreparable rift in the relationship by means of excessive freeloading. Let's see what next week will bring.
