Mildred smiled enjoying being the centre of attention, "I think", she said, "that I might need to be comfortable."
"I know I might need to be." Steele said.
"Are you sure, boss? I wouldn't want you drifting off or anything." Mildred said with a wink making Laura laugh.
"Tell us what you think we might have missed, Mildred."
"Mr Turner is divorcing his wife on the grounds that she's been taking money from their business."
"You mean she'd not divorcing him?" Steele said, "That was the impression I had, did you Laura?"
"I knew they were about to divorce." Laura said.
"Yes, well he wants the divorce." Mildred said.
"What was she saying about her mother warning her?" Laura said.
"Well apparently he divorced his first wife for much the same reasons.
"Ah so that's why she mentioned husbands and wives not working together." Steele said.
"Funny, I think that works rather well." Laura said.
Mildred chuckled, "Believe me honey, you two have something very special and very rare. It wouldn't work for everybody."
"I suppose not", Laura said, "bit of a shame really. But do carry on Mildred."
"Just like with his first wife he had her doing the vast majority of the office work, you know... sort of what I do."
"Exactly what you do Mildred", Steele said, "and believe me we appreciate everything you do."
"Shame he didn't, but then I suppose we wouldn't have any cases if people weren't a bit shonky from time to time."
"Quite Mildred." Steele said suppressing a grin.
"So what do we do now?" Mildred said. "Which of them do we trust?"
"I'm leaning towards believing her at the moment." Laura said, "He seems to have more to gain."
"Or lose." Steele said, "But yes, I agree."
"So our next move?" Mildred said.
"I think we talk to him."
"Do you think he'll talk to us?" Laura said.
"He'll have to", Steele said, "he'll seem less believable if he doesn't and if he is being robbed he'll want to do all he can to have it proven and sorted out."
"Hhhmmm." Laura said thoughtfully.
"That's an interesting comment Laura, care to expand upon it?" Steele said.
"He seems to be going to a lot of effort to make sure as many people as possible know about his wife's indiscretions, well supposed indiscretions. Surely all of this could have been sorted out in-house without having to..."
"Make a big song and dance about it?" Steele said.
"Exactly!"
"Then I think", Mildred said, "we should talk to the first wife too, see what her story is."
"Good idea Mildred." Steele said.
"One question, boss." Mildred said.
"Yes, Mildred I would like you to get in touch with her."
"That wasn't it."
"Oh." Steele said with a lift of his brow. "What was?"
"This time should I come wired, you know just in case."
Laura grinned, "I think we can manage to listen this time Mildred. We have pulled it off many times before."
"That's true." Mildred said.
"Mildred", Steele said winking, "come wired just in case, eh."
Mildred grinned clearly relishing her role in the case, "Aye, aye boss!" She said, "Aye, aye!"
Laura waited until Mildred had left to make the calls she needed to, "Should you really encourage her like that?" She said.
"It's harmless and besides if she does all the listening, well most of the listening then I can concentrate on far more pressing matters."
"Is that so." Laura said moving closer, "and what would they be?"
"Something along the lines of pressing myself.." Steele grabbed her and pulled her to his side, "against far more exciting facts."
Tilting her head Laura smiled, "I could work with that." She said then reaching up met his lips for a long lingering kiss.
"So Mrs Steele, what do you say now?"
"Get that woman some wires!"
"I like the way you think." Steele said.
"Oh Mr Steele.... Harry", Laura said, "I like the way we think."
