Laura watched as Steele navigated the streets before saying, "You know where you're going, don't you."
Steele's eyes never left the road not did his concentration waver as he said, "Where we're going and yes, it does tend to help while driving."
Laura playfully slapped him, "No, I mean you have a plan, you have the day mapped out, don't you?"
"And what would you say if I did?"
"That you're pretty sure of yourself."
"Hopeful is probably the word that springs to mind, well hopeful and optimistic. Are they better?"
"They're good, but I quite like sure, too."
"You do? You do, yes of course you do."
Laura laughed, "About liking the way I think... you might not be so keen on what I'm thinking now."
"You want to stop and call Mildred and let her know we won't be in."
"How did you know that?"
"I know you, we'll stop, we'll phone in but please Laura, please don't ask about work."
"I'll do my best." Laura said winking.
"You know what." Steele said as he spotted a payphone and pulled the car over to the side of the road.
"You're going to call?"
Steele grinned, "Seems you know me too, yes I'm going to call."
Laura waited until he was out of the car before calling, "Mr Steele, please don't ask about work."
Leaning back in he winked at her, 'I'll do my very best." he said.
"I'm counting on it."
Mildred was surprised to hear from him, "Let me guess", she said, "Laura wanted to make sure things were okay here."
"She knew that, she just wanted to make sure that you were alright, and are you?"
"Box of fluffies and will be even more so if I know you kids are having a good time, honestly boss, how often do you just take a day like this?"
"Not often enough as far as I'm concerned, Mildred."
"Exactly, now have a good day and I'll see you tomorrow."
"And you're sure you're alright?"
"Like I'd tell you, besides Felicia is here with me today."
"Well enough said, that's enough to make anyone's day... well interesting."
On her end Mildred grinned, Felicia had a look that told her she had a fair idea about what Steele was saying.
"Yes", she said, "very interesting."
Satisfied Felicia returned to flicking through her magazine, the word 'interesting' obviously having met her approval.
As he rang off and returned to the car Steele couldn't help but smile, he was looking forward to this day, he'd planned to see a film, eat some lunch, just spend some time together the two of them, the two that would soon be four. This was the side of Laura that Wilson had been treated to and hadn't understood or appreciated the gift. But then Wilson had been extremely blind to the incredible gift of Laura and had missed much of what and who she was. That wouldn't happen with him, with them. He knew exactly who and what she was and he celebrated, loved and appreciated it all.
Laura too had been thinking about how this would have completely unraveled Wilson and yet not only was her gorgeous husband as enthusiastic as she was the idea had been his, she knew with all of her heart that they were meant for each other but moments like these just confirmed and cemented it for her, it was perfect.
"So", she said as he slipped back into the car beside her, "where to next"?
"A lovely little film", he said, "How do you feel about seeing a film this early in the day?"
"I sometimes feel my whole life with you is a film."
"Oh, a good one?"
"The best and most wonderful I've ever seen." Laura said then grinning added, "Then it's the most hilarious at times and the most fun too."
"Ah so the something for everyone type?"
Looking at him from under her lashes Laura nodded, "Oh yes", she said because at times it can be downright..."
"Hold on to that thought, Mrs Steele."
"For how long?"
"Oh how about til the last act of the evening?"
"I'm sure we could slip in some scenes along the way."
Steele swallowed, straightened his tie and started the car, "As I've said before and will no doubt say many times more, I really do like the way you think."
"Good", Laura said, "because I think I do too."
