(I must point out there are parts of dialog in this that are lifted stright from the show and are not my work at all.
Steele Something New
It wasn't that he adverse to trying new things. Quite the contrary, he was the man who had created a life by living lives, each one filled with new and exciting vocations and activities. It simply didn't appeal to him and didn't seem at all natural.

The interesting part of this new venture was it seemed to hold many of the same elements his own life did, he and Miss Holt were more alike that he thought she'd care to think or admit. They played roles to suit their cases and circumstances. They tried and experienced many new and seemingly impossible feats with varying degrees of success but always with the same passion to do them and do them well.

He was aware and quite willing to admit that Laura really didn't ask much of him and when she did it was always related to a case, well almost always. She did have that rather persistent habit of wanting to know his name. He often wondered just who needed to know, was it Laura Holt private investigator or was it Laura Holt the woman? He wasn't certain which prospect scared and intrigued him most but suspected it was the latter.

So here he was, contemplating her request and at the same time trying not to think about it. A happy go lucky type of chap in his shoes would be able to fool himself that she'd forget all about it, he was far too realistic and aware of her and her strong mind and determination to even try to convince himself of that. He was certain she'd remember, what he wasn't certain of was his ability to perform the task.

Looking back Daniel had often made the same request of him and once he'd made the effort the results hadn't been as frightening as he'd expected. Daniel had often coaxed him far beyond his comfort zone, it was never very difficult for him to do so partly due to the fact that in his younger days he struggled to leave a challenge unanswered but due far more to the strong loyalty he felt towards his friend.

He knew that the same feelings were going to cause him to fulfill Laura's challenge and submit to her unspoken but obvious challenge for him to at least try. The interesting part was she was equally as convinced that the outcome would be pleasant for him as he was that it could well be a disaster. Although she hadn't mentioned it again he harboured no false hopes, she was simply far too caught up in the case but once that was solved she'd ask him again, of that he had no doubt.

The case itself had proved to be very satisfying in many ways, and the urge or pride and accomplishment surprised him. Under Laura's excellent tutelage, he'd picked up many new skills and tricks of the trade for want of a better term and had enjoyed being a apart of the team. He even felt he was bridging the gap between himself and Murphy, something that was going to be essential if they were to succeed in their plan.

Laura grinned at Steele knowing full well that he'd remembered his promise, the case had closed with sad results but at least had been solved and had given Mike the closure he needed along with the ability to keep going. And as Steele had pointed out in the way that only he could, "In 'The Third Man', Joseph Cotten killed Orson Welles."

She couldn't believe there were still foods that he hadn't at least tasted, after all the man had lived several lives around the globe and she was fairly certain she'd only seen the tip of the ice-burg thus far. Pointing at the food she said, "You know, you promised me you'd try at least one."

Feeling the food could leap off the plate at him Steele grimaced and said, "Yes, well, I was hoping you wouldn't remember that."

Laura could barely hold back her grin and said assuringly, "It's all part of the training program."

"Actually, I've been feeling the urge to become a flashy front man again."

"It's good for you. Pure protein. There's tuna, sea bass, yellow tail..."

Swallowing Steele picked one up, "I suppose this doesn't look too difficult. What is it?" he asked before putting the piece in his mouth.

"Octopus."

Spitting it out Steele grabbed his tea before drinking it quickly. "I never finished telling you about the cat on the roof, did I? You see, there were these two brothers, one of whom had a cat that he loved very much...."

The sound of Laura's laughter made him smile, if asked he'd probably have to say his attempt to taste sushi had been rather unsuccessful but with that sweet sound ringing in his ears and knowing he was the cause of it he felt anything but a failure. And although not a culinary delight his visit into the unknown had been worth the effort.

As they left the restaurant he said, "Next time, Miss Holt, I think I'll cook, cook being the operative word."

Reaching up to touch his chin Laura smiled, "Anytime you like, Me Steele, anytime you like."
