It was only a few minutes later that Ash sauntered, all attitude and bad-boy scowl. All of his defenses were high up, every survival instinct demanding it. Ash was no stranger to jail, after all, and this place didn't seem much different from it. It was more dangerous, probably. Much more dangerous. Unpredictable. Nonetheless, Ash imagined it had all the same principles. The strong dominating the weak. Ash had to make sure that he and Eiji were counted among the strong, at least as long as it would take for him to get Eiji out of this mess they had gotten them both into.

Anyone who looked his way when he walked in was met with a level glare, not actively looking for trouble but meeting others' challenges to say that, pretty as he was he was still nobody's bitch.

Almost immediately, Ash spotted Eiji's childish, Japanese face and zeroed in on him, scowling further that the other had thought it was safe to go ahead and shower on his own.

"Eiji!" he called out with a short wave as he picked up his stride a little and caught up to the other, carefully hiding his relief from his expression. "Hey, babe, what are you up to?" As Ash spoke, he adjusted his body language to be in close proximity with Eiji, one hand reaching out casually to tuck a stray lock of hair behind Eiji's ear.

Unsurprisingly Ash walked on the balls of his feet, quiet like a cat; Eiji never even heard him coming, until -- oh wow -- there he was still wearing the ripped tuxedo from their stay in golzine's mansion; he was waving and calling Eiji's name.

"Ash, hello!" Eiji fumbled around for the showertap, missed and finally turned it off. "How are you? You look --"

"Uh?" Eiji said to the hand. It looked so pale in the harsh fluorsecent lightning in the bathroom; this close he could see blue veins. There was something weirdly familiar about this pose -- had this happened before and if so when? -- about the way Ash's hand was fingercombing hair and sliding behind the shell of his ear. Eiji slowly tore his eyes from the sight and refocused his gaze on Ash's eyes.

Which were gazing at him meaningfully, which was when Eiji remembered.

Play along those eyes commanded.

"Um, I'm fine," he said, frantically thinking. What were the girls in romances and shoujo manga always calling their boyfriends?? " -- my boyfriend?"

"Hey, call me 'honey'," Ash corrected without so much as missing a beat, winding one arm around Eiji's waist to pull him close enough to be convincing. "Didn't I teach you that once already, baby? You're so cute I can't stand it sometimes. But what trouble are you up to? Who said you could take a shower without me, hm?" Leaning in, Ash brushed his lips against Eiji's temple, then went to nibble playfully at his earlobe before his sharp green eyes flickered around the shower room to make sure no one was paying particularly close attention to them. Once he was relatively sure it was safe, he whispered into Eiji's ear.

"Eiji, it's not safe here for you to be alone or for people to think you can't defend yourself, okay? You gotta pretend we're together so I can defend you better. It's a pain and I'm sorry, but just play along for now," he explained softly, then smiled charmingly at Eiji not entirely unlike a predator on prowl before he leaned in to cover Eiji's lips with his own for a second time since they met. This kiss made a show of being passionate, of being dominating and possessive. The last thing Ash wanted was for Eiji to wind up like him, and for now this was the only way he knew to protect him.

"I am not in trouble --" Eiji started, and he definitely did not squawk. "honey," he added, shaking his head. As they moved closer together, Eiji placed a tentative arm around Ash's shoulder in what he hoped was an alluring manner. Oh god, were people staring at them? He sneaked a look out of the corner of his eye; no one was; evidently this sort of display in the showers was normal here?? Maybe this wasn't as different as donning sunglasses. Sneaking into Chinatown and blending in with the locals. Yeah.

"You are always one step ahead of me," he grumbled. "Ash. It is a little weird your way of secret communication with me in prison always involves ah ... flirting, but I'm glad to see you. Are you okay? I can't carry out secret messages for you this ti --"

Sometimes Eiji's natural impulses failed to kick in right away.

In moments of extreme embarrassment or shock, his impulses would argue each to each, leaving his body frozen in indecision and open to anything from a broken bottle to the face ... or a kiss. Why oh why could he not have figured out this side of himself in Japan before going and getting mixed up in Ash's crazy life? In Japan no one had ever tried to shoot Eiji, or threaen him with a broken gin bottle, or ... kissed him.

Not that this counted as a real kiss; it was an act.

Eiji felt his eyes widen. The back of his neck warmed. It was warm, too, where Eiji's hand lay on Ash's shoulder. No way, he thought, I can't handle much more of this. If he blushed much harder, blood would probably gush out of nose, leaving him bloodless and dead there on the bathroom floor of an insane asylum.

He broke away first, to breathe, and smack Ash on the neck, in what hopefully appeared to be a teasing manner. "Ash!"

"So, he whispered, looking into those green eyes. "What is your rooommate like?"

"...we don't get on very well," Ash admitted with a sigh as he pulled away a little, rubbing the back of his neck. He backed up another half step, a familiar unease filling him now that the immediate need to stake a claim on Eiji was past. When Ash was around Eiji, when Ash held Eiji and interacted with Eiji and found himself becoming ever closer with Eiji, he was comfortable in ways that he was with no one else in the world. There was a trust there, a bond that even Ash could not fully explain or fathom. They were something that simply just... was. A phenomenon more than a relationship, that was what they had between them.

All the same, or perhaps even because of that, Ash didn't feel right dragging Eiji down to crash and burn with him. Selfishly, so utterly selfishly, Ash wanted to hold Eiji in his arms and keep him forever. Eiji was so clean and idealistic and so very perfectly naive that when Ash was around him, Ash could almost forget all the terrible things that ever happened to him. Eiji's innocence made Ash feel new again, and because of that, Ash was terrified that the opposite was true. That being around him, being surrounded by all of the death and corruption and cruelty that was Ash's world, was slowly corroding all the goodness in Eiji.

Ash couldn't let that happen. Eiji hadn't fallen to his side of the tracks yet. Eiji could still make it in this world, make something beautiful of his life. And so Ash could not help shutting Eiji out a little. It was best if they...

It would be best if Eiji could shut the chapter of his life that was Ash Lynx cleanly once this was all offer.

"We woke up in the same bed, and," Ash sighed heavily as he tried to explain, looking rather disgruntled, "we had a few misunderstandings in a row. Is yours okay? He seemed, uh... Kind of touched in the head."
