BOILER ROOM stedelweissmods September 26 2009, 18:58:32 UTC
[Through the door from the staff area, you have made it into a narrow hallway leading to your left and to your right. There were voices talking in the small rooms to your right, and you've made the correct decision to follow your instincts (and the noise and smokey smell unmistakably connected with boiler plants) to your left. There, behind a heavy steal door your leader's key could thankfully unlock, you find the boiler room abandoned ( ... )

After Cross broke away from the lookouts, he hurried down the corridor and ducked through the first door, which placed him in a smaller area filled with doors. He pondered for a moment, then veered off to the left, heading for the actual boiler room that Howl had just unlocked. Pleased that the key actually worked, he gave a quick nod and encouraged the group to branch out with a wave of his arms. "Go on, then, look around. We didn't come all the way here to stand around and gawk."

He would leave the heated room to the others for now-- there were quite a few doors out here in this second hallway that intrigued him. Perhaps he'd be able to open a few.

Well, it would be a shame to get this far and not even see the boiler room. Who knew, maybe they would have to cut short early. So for the sake of getting a glimpse of their purpose, he poked his head inside for a quick look around, cringing at the stifling heat and the overwhelming smell of charring and smoke. The latter was actually kind of comforting.

Still, his warning of, "Be careful, damn it, it's hot. Don't melt your hands to anything," was quietly barked out, even though he was sure they all had enough common sense not to touch any ridiculously hot metal. Never hurt to be cautious, though.

He blinked and straightened up at the call of his name, glancing to Alyss. "What's the matter?"

"I don't mind at all. In fact, you can help me out." That said, he placed a hand on one of Alyss' slight shoulders, leading her away from the main boiler room door and back out in to the smaller hallway. As always during these outings, his voice was low and careful. "See all the doors lining this hallway? I'd like to have a look inside a few of them. Might find something useful."

[In the front part of the room, the floor is relatively empty, except for a pile of what looks like rags and old clothes to your right, between the first two boilers (both burning, the very first with its door open). Upon entering the boiler room, you notice a strange smell that isn't quite wood or coal, somewhere in the smoke. Farther ahead, to your left, just before the room narrows a bit, you can see a wall partition covering your view to what is immediately behind it. The farthest part of the room is doubtlessly the messiest - piles of coal and other things that you can't identify from the distance cover the ground between the single boiler plants. Only the area around the farthest boiler seems wiped clean completely.]

[As you peek around the corner, you notice a pile of what seems to be relatively new clothes - mostly notable because hardly any of them fit the time period of the late 19th century. Mostly folded cleanly, these clothes stick out for their outlandish styles and, partially, colourful patterns. There is also - strangely for a boiler room - a small, dirty desk with a side-drawer on the wall. The desk itself is empty except for a crinkled envelop, with the words "Wir haben sie" scribbled on it hastily and in big, black handwriting.]

[The article you are holding is a pair of wide, men-sized white trousers with notable bright-blue stripes running down both legs, as well as a black belt with which the trousers were obviously bound around the wearer's waist. Obviously too large for you, but fitting a tall, athletic man certainly. As you open the envelop and look inside, you find pieces of paper - old, worn out paper, clearly older than the envelope itself.]

[You hold a buch of old, worn out pieces of paper in hands, covered with handwritten notes in a tidy, narrow script. The pieces seem a list or something like that, perhaps formerly all arranged to one single document. As you examine them, a few things are readable clearly at least. There is one piece, apparently the header, from the larger size of the script, reading "PATIENT #183". Several bits of the others are covered with smears and are partially unreadable, but for the parts that you can decipher, they are obviously listing characteristics of a person. You can make out the following: One piece reading "Name" and nothing else, another reading "Geschlecht: Männlich", "Alter: 39", and "Körpergröße: 1,85 Meter", yet another reading "Gewicht: 78 Kilogramm", and "Beruf: Metzger", another reading "Geburtsdatum: 13. September 1849", another reading "Datum der Einweisung: 1. August 1879" and "Grund der Einweisung: Mord", another reading "Umstände: 13 Kinder im Alter zwischen 4 und 9 Jahren in Haus des Patienten aufgefunden; Tod durch ( ... )

[Sadly, the drawer is locked. It does not look too strong in construction, however. Enough force might make the wood break. If the workers will like that sight too much when they resume working, however, is the other question.]
